What's a good alloy tubular rim?

Hey everyone. I'm wanting to build a nice set of handbuilt tubular wheels for crit racing, as well as training. I've got a couple of pairs of handbuilt wheels from my shop, and I'm looking to rebuild one set onto some alloy tubular rims.

I see a lot of people go for the older rims such as Mavic GEL 330's, GP4's and the like. Are these alloy tubular rims that good of a deal over something such as the modern day Mavic Reflex or the Velocity Escape?

Thoughts? Comments?

Pettit

Also, what's a good all-around tubular tire that is durable, yet good enough to race on? Thinking something along the lines of the Vittoria Rally.

I've had good luck with the Continental Sprinter.

Got some 32 hole Campy Record hubs.

I'm hovering around the 175lb range, which isn't too bad on my 6'3"ish frame. I'm a little tough on my equipment, as well.

Primary use would be crit racing, but also would like it for nice training rides.

11.4 is the guru here...

Search his posts on the topic, or wait for him to wade in and give his opinion.
Always worth reading.

+1 I've got an Ambrosio/Phil Wood fixie set with Conti Competitions -- my favorite wheels. Got them from 11.4.
