Canti fork to mid reach caliper fork - horrible idea?

I have a canti bike and am having issues with squealing brakes, thinking of switching to mid reach calipers. The rear was built with canti studs AND a brake bridge, looks like mid reach would be perfect. The fork has a A/C of 395 how horrible to go to 385? The bike was built for a 45 rake, current fork has a 47 rake and is fine. I know I can use mini-vees and may go that route. Tire clearance should be fine as I am running 700 x 32c tires.

You can get a tall crown race and make up 5-7mm of height which will probably be ok. Your saddle will move forward a few mm too.

Have you installed one of these for $10?

Replacing the fork is a pretty radical solution for a brake problem.

Who installed the brakes? I suggest taking the bike to another mechanic. Squealing is the sign of mal adjustment: pads should be adjusted so you have no noise.
Don´t buy anything yet. Maybe just the trinklet suggested by Kontact but most of all adjust your brakes. Cantis are a bit more tricky to adjust but that´s part of their charm. Otoh you have a lot of braking power and a lot of tire clearance.

You had me until that bit. It's illogical and poor substitute for a well designed system.

Good cantis are no more difficult to adjust than V brakes.

I disagree: a badly designed system is the one that works badly... not a system that requires expertise to adjust.
Do you think a violin is a badly designed instrument because it´s harder to play than a piano?
A canti brake is able to perform better than vees when it comes to tire clearance. A violin is able to produce a certain sound that a piano can´t even though both instrumenst basically play notes.

Can you say more about that?

I've got a mid-reach caliper bike I'm about to get canti bosses put on, and the brakes I want to use are Paul Moto-Lites (aren't those V-brakes?)... the problem I'm trying to solve is the calipers' limited tire clearance, so if the Pauls aren't much improvement I should find out before I take this step.

Hard to see how they wouldn't be a really huge improvement, though...?

You're comparing a centermount caliper to a V-brake. He's comparing cantis to V-brakes. Both V-brakes and cantis are going to have much more clearance than a centermount caliper.

Motolites are V brakes.

Yes, actually the front is ok, the rear not so much.

Sorry - I thought you were talking about your fork in the OP.

Think his issue is squealing, not shuddering, which can be related, of course.
But I agree..brake pad alignment, toe-ing, etc for squealing, otherwise mini-vs.
