Bike shoe fit question

So I'm growing a little tired of the inconvenient side of SPD-SL shoes, in particular for the areas I ride, and I'm moving towards a good stiff SPD shoe. The model I've been eyeing is the Shimano XC-7's which seem to strike a good balance of stiffness, weight, stability off the bike, etc. I've heard the gravel versions run a little narrower, so they're out.
I just tried a bunch of shoes on at the local LBS and was surprised not by any issues about width- I don't have particularly narrow fit and didn't have problems like I though I might with Shimano's reputedly slight narrower fit now (in regular sizes) and a pair of XC5's fit fine. What I did notice was how much heel slippage I had with Shimano's, Specialized (less), and Fizik's. Anyone else experience this? Any thoughts as to the fit of the newer XC7(02)'s? Width? Heel?
Bit of a rambling post! Feedback on fit would be appreciated.

in my experience, if I had heel silp when walking with a shoe, I never noticed while riding.. YMMV.. if you are concerned, you can try a shoe with a moldable heel like some of the Lakes (and others I'm sure)..

Not sure if it's just in my head but the more recent Shimano shoes that I've bought (XC-9) feel wider in the toe box than previous generations.

If your shoe size does not exceed women's sizing, try a women's version of a shoe you like, as they often have a narrower heel with the same toe box. Women's Sidi's are an example.

I got the xc902 in same size as my previous xxx bontragers. I noticed that with some previous shoes which were slightly too big I had heel slippage, when I had properly sized shoes no heel slip.

Thanks for the feedback! It's true that heel rub is generally less of an issue on the bike, though I do find that with really stiff carbon shoes it can become more apparent.

When I've had heel slippage in a shoe, I add a adhesive tongue pad which pushes your heel a bit into the back. Works for me.
