For me it was a Serotta CRL. Rode and raced a lot of bikes from ‘75 thru the 80’s then got a chance to ride that CRL. I now own 2 Serottas.

Kestrel MXZ

The first I saw the Kestrel MXZ frame hanging from a bike shop in the late 80s, it blew my mind.

Pegoretti Palo Santo. Been on this forum for a bit. Got enamored with all that I was hearing about custom bikes and higher end bikes but didn't really understand until getting on the Peg. Whoa! Instant smile.

Wow so much goodness. It's gone to a PL'er who is hopefully joyfully riding it about and enjoying its goodness. 'Twas a tad too big and not enough room in the stable. Always felt a tad stretched in the TT esp climbing. Have been on the lookout for a smaller Duende or something out there.

Actually, I guess my first WHOA also came from Pegoretti when I saw one in a bike shop window and I'd never seen bikes painted in such freestyle, expressive manner.

But the ride.... addictive.

That bike that made you go "WHOA!"

That bike that made you go "WHOA!"
Friend lived at the bottom of a short ridable hill
Her garage door faced looking at that hill
She wasn't a serious rider
Owned an inexpensive step thru woman bike
I got on once and tried to ride up that hill for the heck of it
The frame flexed so much I could not get up that hill
all the power went into the frame flexing
"That bike that made you go "WHOA!" what a pile of useless metal and rubber!!!!

With pink highlights? I started with the blue one, got hit by a car and broke the top and down tubes. Next version was the black one.

Neither can hold a candle to my current titanium Strong.

Drove 2h oneway to pick it up, turned out it was EL-OS and built by someone who knew what they were doing.

Put Athena 11 and TB14s on it and was blown away during my first ride.
"Whoa" because I had no expectation when I bought it, and it's definitely up there with my CSi and Casati MAX.
Gsinill, that Mayfield is stunning!! What a score!! I hope you can find out more about the builder somewhere.

WHOA bike

High school...I got a Univega "Gran Tour" or "Gran Sport". Not sure which one.

I rode that into the ground. I'd take it up/around Tilden, the 3 Bears, Wildcat Canyon etc. Oh yeah - Bell "Windjammer" helmet. Toe clips, t shirt. etc. etc.

And then one day, on my way home on a ride, I stopped by a bike shop to top up my tires.

They had a Tomassini SLX in the stand - and they allowed me to take it out + around the block on a lark.

Holy cow.

And that was it.

Of course, it took a long (LONG) time to get to even breathe in the vicinity of such a work of art.

But it's one that I'll never forget.

1995. This bike was sick and so ahead of it's time, with double shocks nearly double the travel and slacker laid back geometry. Not light enough for cros country but the engineering was up there.

I was racing a Csi200 at the time. First American bike I owned and it was a rocket.

If this is Beaumaris in Vic, I'm only a few suburbs away in Elsternwick.

Big aluminium fan and have always wanted to see one of these in the flesh!

Can I buy you a coffee (or beer, whatever) for the privilege?
