OT - Facebook Messenger Question...
Hey folks, I use messenger in Facebook every day, just access it by clicking the icon in the top right of my Facebook screen (on MacBook Pro).
But today, when I am in Facebook, if I click on the icon, or just click on any of the names in my 'chat' list in the lower right, it now opens a new tab/webpage asking me to sign in separately to messenger. Anyone else getting this? Is it something new that can be turned off?? |

Still works for me the same way you did it so far.
But I think there is something wrong in general with Messenger. Since a few days my chats on the website don't match the ones I have in the Messenger app on my phone. Not surprising though since FB completely sucks IMO when it comes to user interface/experience. |

Happened to me before but went away on its own.
A bit of a tangent in case you didn't know. I don't care for yet another app on my iPhone so I use FB on the Safari browser. To get into messages, you can tap on the middle icon at the bottom of the screen with the arrow pointing up. This brings up the window with Message, Mail etc. In the lower section, scroll to the right and select Request Desktop Site. You will now be able to read messages with having to use the Messenger app. Don't know if this is the case for Android devices. |

Are you talking about FB wanting you to download messenger to your Mac? It's a new app that works full time (no need to log into Facebook) and allows phone calling and video chat etc.
You do not need to download this as you can continue to use it the way you have in the past. At least that is how I understand it, maybe others have more direct user knowledge. |

They have been fiddling with it. Hopefully they don't totally screw it up, I'm definitely never giving them my phone number.

Screen shot attached, you can see the Facebook tab in the middle, and when I hit the messenger icon in the top right of the Facebook page, the current page opens up in a new tab asking me to sign in, fields at the bottom right. Uses the same user/pass as my Facebook...

If I instead click on a friends name in the lower right chat list, it then opens this page....

I get none of that so I wonder if you already downloaded the new Messenger App?
Might be the case. |

Just found this...
https://www.facebook.com/help/commun...10479675245201 Interesting since it describes what you encounter but the thread is already 4 years old. Looks like once this hits you, there is nothing you can do. Unless they changed it since to allow turning it off and that thread is just outdated. |

It would be interesting to see if a different browser (Firefox or Chrome) elicits the same behavior.
