Best insoles for cycling shoes?

Does anyone own a pair they really recommend? I have very painful calluses on the balls of both feet from my SPD clips. If anyone else has experienced this and has tried a more comfortable SPD set-up, I’d love to hear about it.

Thanks so much.

maybe

if you are riding plain old double sided SPD pedals, the clips should be hitting between the balls of your feet and your toes; right in the hollow back there. have you tried repositioning the cleats.

None of us want calluses on our balls .

I’ve used specialized insoles for years. They come in three arch heights. For me they make the difference whether I have uncomfortable feet or numb toes in the same shoe otherwise.

I really like the Icebug thin version. They make a thicker version as well and various arch sizes. In addition they have a bump which helps with a neuroma.

Thanks for all the replies. Really helpful. Since you (kind of) asked Eddie: Shoes, clips, and callous(es). Sorry to be graphic.

Sole makes some of the best, but insoles ain't gonna fix that imo.

That's all down to cleat position and shoe flex.

I like my Icebugs as well, but they may not be for everyone. The metatarsal bump is quite prominent, and I think I remember at least one person here complaining about that. My response would be that when you are actually pedaling, that bump gets squished down and a lot of us probably won’t notice it. They make insoles out of foam, not out of marble. But, we all are different.

The other thing is that they are very, very slim insoles. They are thinner than the Specialized insoles. I know a few people who like the G8 2620 insoles, and those are very thick as bike insoles go. In my case, my current road shoe is relatively low volume for me, so the Icebugs work a lot better for me, and the G8s don’t fit in them at all. I am not sure if the Icebugs might make a shoe fit too loose for anyone, but I suppose it’s worth considering.

Volume aside, I prefer the Icebugs to Specialized, because of the thickness and because the metatarsal pad on the Icebugs seems to work for me. I got a couple pairs of the previous G8 version on eBay for cheap. I don’t like them, but I suspect it’s mainly because they are very high volume (for me). They simply take up too much space in my shoes and they change how they fit.

I have the Specialized insoles as well and I'm satisfied.

As eddief suggested, the OP could be feeling the recess in the sole where the metal retaining plate for the cleat resides. I'd try filling the gap with silicone or hot melt glue. A thin plastic strip would be another alternative.

Another vote for specialized here. The metatarsal bump they include really helps me.

I saw one poster here mention numb toes. I get numb toes, which I think is partly due to wide feet (I now have wide Lake shoes and but that didn't seem to help). I've also got quite the callous running along the bone behind my 2nd toe. I think the continued pressure here is what causes the numbness to start. This is also wear my street shoes begin to wear out. Any suggestions on insole types that may help? I'm using the Icebug slims right now with the medium arch support. I tried the high arch support but it was too much. Numbness sets in after just 20 miles or so.

Do I recall correctly that you are in the SF Bay Area? If you’re interested, consider seeing Doug Ehrenberg in Corte Madera.

He made orthotics that helped significantly with my hotfoot.
