Powder coat or paint shop in LA
I have my eye on a new mountain bike, but the paint is ugly as sin. Anyone know of a good shop in the Los Angeles region to get a steel frame powdercoated? Just need a simple single color and gloss coat. Hoping to skip shipping.

I had a frame blasted and powdercoated at Safeway. Just a basic black color but they did a good job. They tried to charge me a higher price in person than what I was quoted over the phone though. Not a big deal because they quickly agreed to honor the phone price when I brought it up.

Safeway -- Kyle is the man.
They do good work and its closer than Olympic - Near the Baldwin Hills Overlook. Should be about $200. They do a good job. They open and close early -- be warned.

I don’t remember any of their names but they were all nice. I want to say my black powder job was only around $120

I have had a number of things (including a bike frame) done at Tortoise Industries. They are off of San Fernando, just south of Glendale

A few months later and the original bike is gone, but I have another project in mind.
Would any of these places (or others) apply decals under a clear coat? Paul @ Rock Lobster said he would send whatever I need to refresh the scheme on my frame, so the shop wouldn't need to generate the decals, just apply. Also open to wet paint options. I have a couple of schemes in mind, in addition to the go-to seafoam. Probably wouldn't bother getting a fork painted, though, unless I do wet paint on the frame. You might reach out to Hern Montenegro of MMFG. He's started doing more paintwork but I don't know how far he has progressed. I do know that he's painting the frames he's showing at NAHBS, though.
He's good people too. |

Good idea. I sent him an email.

Are they powdercoated or wet painted? One assumes both forks are wet painted. |

The forks are definitely wet paint. I presume the olive is powder, because the shade is different from the frame. These are just some pics of interesting color schemes I found scrolling his facebook page, haven't gotten farther down the road than that.

Has anyone used Beach Cities Powder Coating in Gardena? They came recommended by Carlos @ Dark Moon. I was quoted $135 for media blasting and single color powder.

Dropped the frame off at Safeway today.
The guy at the counter quoted me $125 for the in stock color I chose, which is lower than the email quote I originally got, but the turnaround time had increased to 10 business days. We'll see what happens. Still way faster and cheaper than dealing with shipping it somewhere. Last edited by jtbadge; 04-03-2019 at 08:31 PM. |
