Sabotage Classifieds

Just curious, why do so many posters try to sabotage other people's classifieds.

I've read more than a few times things like: Nice frame but ugly color, who would ride that; No one rides rim brakes; You can buy this (part) on (A**z*n) for this lower price.

Why not help out other Paceliners' with something more constructive like: I rode those tires and they were very smooth with minimal flats; Nice bike, I wish I was in the market for one.

If you feel that it is overpriced maybe PM them a link to the other source or let them know if there is anything wrong with their listing privately.

Just saying?

Can’t say that I’ve noticed very much of that.

I haven’t noticed very much of that either. In general I find that posters who are just commenting on the item provide context that is useful to me.

I can't say I read every post in the classifieds, but I definitely do not think comments as above are frequent here.

I haven’t seen much of this but, you might be able to post and not allow follow ups, other than private messaging. This would resolve your concern. Of course your other option, and one that I tend to follow, is don’t buy anything that you don’t plan on keeping. This has generally worked well for me.

Yeah, I'm with the others. I don't really see that happening here at all.

Now some of the FB groups I'm on are just brutal despite rules against it.

If I think a point I may make in a point or question on someone else's FS thread could do anything but add value to seller, I skip it or send a PM. If they are asking a crazy price I leave thread and don't come back usually.

I agree, not prevalent here, but it does happen. If these people are driving down the street and see someone shopping at the Ford dealer, do they pull over, jump out and start telling them that a Chevy is better?

Occasionally I feel the urge to point out pricing issues but I resist. I don't generally see "feedback" unless something is really egregious.

I try to say positive comments generally. The most common "negative" comment I see is from the rim brake/mechanical crowd, disparaging disc/electronic only frames.

Also, all bets are off in the PSA thread. Some great deals in there, but occasionally you get a pile of rust with Sachs or Pegoretti on the side for $5000, and that needs to be called out as a bad deal.

Agree with above. Also, over time, it's clear who the few folks are here who are asking close to retail prices for their stuff, and I don't even open those posts.

Once in a great while I will see a price for an item that is more than it can be bought for in a current or ongoing sale, and if I feel I "know" the seller, I'll PM that person with a link. I'd want someone to do that for me.

Sniping in a Classified thread itself is not a good look.

Examples? I have not observed that.

But what you do see is someone talking about a bike they want and people dumping on them and telling to do something completely different.

It's because some people never listened when their mother said:

"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Out of curiosity I went back the last 12 pages of the classifieds and couldn't find a single example of what you perceived to be negative responses. Au contraire, the overwhelming majority of responses are complementary of the frame/bike/components for sale followed by I wish it was smaller/bigger and I wish I had the funds
ps. And didn't notice any members price policing either.
Care to link the threads?
