It is indeed a fine bike. Custom built for me from a mix of Columbus SP and 531 tubing, Cinelli BB and crown. The cost in 1982 was $365 CDN! A repaint is around $145, not sure about current turnaround times. Cheers

C-50 is very difficult to beat as a go fast bike. I like its combination of stiffness to vertical compliance. The Nago geometry is magical to me; I like its short chain stays and slowish front end. It always make me go faster than I should. Time is new to me and I had maybe a dozen rides on it. It wears Campy Hyperons and the bike is just crazy light. It has more flex than the C50 but never enough to make you nervous or feel slow. I prefer the C50's know-where-every-inch-of-your-bike-is when you dive in to a corner at 35mph. Time's geometry is much quicker than the Nago and you do have to pick the right lines in bumpy descends with the Time. It's a pure joy to climb with (however, much of that can be contribute to the hyperons). My Serottas are very faithful to the Serotta fit philosophy: low BB, neutral angles, tiny head tube extensions. They are standards to what I judge my other bikes with: Legend my primary trainer, Ottrott my smoothest, Hors my best descending. |

4.5 and counting
Latest is the Pegoretti Marcelo I purchased just over a year ago. Its the nicest bike I've owned: fast, comfortable and stable, just a joy to ride.
Waterford RS-11--Old school, lugged Reynolds 531. Smooth like butter on the road. I've only ridden this frame fixed. Its my commuter. If I ever get the bug, it would make a great 650B conversion. But why would I do that??? Bridgestone X0-3- I bought this during the last days of B-stone fire sale. Meant to be a commuter, now that those duties are assigned to the Waterford, the Bridgestone gets used a rain bike. Since I live in Tucson, it mostly sits in the storage shed, waiting for precipitation or that tour down the Pacific coast that we talk about but never do. Then there's the 1995 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp I bought for my fortieth b-day. It hasn't been ridden in years, but its too nice of a bike to sell. If I ever ride off road again-it could happen, this will be the perfect little hard tail on which to do so. Finally, there is the Santana tandem. Its a Noventa, their premium steel frame. One day, my wife announces that she thinks we should get a tandem. Huh, I think, what's gotten in to her? She hadn't been on a bike in years, but she thought it would be a nice way for her to see me on the weekends. I figured, what the heck, its always fun to shop for a bike. What a great inspiration she had, Since then, she's become an avid cyclist and now commutes to work by bike several days a week. She has a spiffy little steel/carbon Lemond and an ancient boat anchor Specialized Hardrock mixte for commuting. The last bike we own is a sweet little NOS Torelli recently built up for our daughter who at 22 finally discovered the joys of cycling. Now, if we can ever get our son away from his cello, maybe we can get him on a bike too. I have a salvaged frame that would just fit 6'3" size. Steve-Enough bikes, but maybe room for a randonneur/audax frame sometime: Jitensa or Montana Road bike from Mr Kirk or the Hampsten's bros Strada Bianca or... |

I was ignoring this thread
due to guilt.... Well maybe not after reading about all of your great rides. Here are mine in no particular order:
1) Moots Compact SL 2) Calfee Dragonfly 3) Waterford R33 The Calfee may be on the block soon. My son is 16, getting good grades, and needs a car. The Calfee could probably fund a decent / safe beater. Or maybe he could just ride a bike! He would love that. |

FlaRider was so kind to point out that I forgot my Pinarello Paris carbon bike. It is one terrific ride.

1987 Grandis - Columbus SL. The gold standard for handling.
1992 Croll - Reynolds 531. The tin foil standard for handling. 1995 Croll - Reynolds 531. The copper standard for handling. Best old-style lugged steel bike I own. Best balance. Good handling. Straight. Comfortable. 2003 or so Eddy Merkcx Majestic Ti - Great handling. Best fit of all my bikes. Wooden Ti feel. Not very smooth riding. Ti must be better than this and I am assured it is by Legend riders. The bike stays because of its excellent fit and handling characteristics. And 'cuz I can't afford a Legend copy of this bike. 2003 or so Look KG 381i - Possibly superior to the Merkx in handling and maybe equal to the Grandis. Excellent race bike geometry. Very good ride quality. Not very stiff, but stiff enough for this now-wimpy former racer. The bike sure isn't what is holding me back. Stiff enough for Jalabert = stiff enough for me. 2004 (I think) Serotta Colorado III - Not a pure race bike. One CM too big. But if I had to rescue one bike from a burning house, this would probably be it. Great ride quality, neutral handling, stiff enough, 'steel is real' zippiness. Great all-arounder. |
