I just became aware of the fact that forums like this aren't cool

I think the cool kids use redit or something to talk about bicycles and that forums like this are web 1.0 but in an uncool way. I wouldn't know about this because I am too old to know what is hip.

Maybe somebody here is young and can conform my suspicions.

IDK.

I'm still upset that they split rec.bicycles.misc into rec.bicycles.singlespeed and rec.bicycles.fixxie. That was just uncalled for.

I'm not sure these old fashioned sites have been beat for community and moderation.

These sites are "the old way of the internet" and are more true to the original spirit.

The work of moderating and being a good community is small here because every one of these forum sites takes care of itself.

A facebook/reddit type place where everything is centralized is not the internet model and in the end causes tons of our modern problems.

That said I like reddit, but I don't belong to any of the bike sub-reddits.

I am young-ish at 27, but likewise as above. I use Reddit heavily, but not for cycling. That is reserved for forums where people mostly know their stuff. I think that's where you get the most out of your time spent online.

Reddit is bad for knowledge because there are no long running threads. So every week the same topic comes up again. It's like a slower chatroom.

Sure we have perennial rain gear and lights threads here, but overall I think the forum structure does a better job of keep conversations focused and nicely organized provided users are willing to use the search.

Call me old but Reddit imo is short on attention and detail. For those who want much fast funny etc and pics then sure.

Forums like this are where conversations and knowledge go to live.

Reddit however just doesn’t do it for me so might call me bias.

Depends. Reddit.com/r/peloton is great for catching up on racing and meaningful discussion. Far better than here.

r/espresso is great if you're into coffee and are seeking knowledge on coffee stuff

The list goes on, but it's great over there, too.

I've been using Reddit a lot lately. One problem is that a thread usually dies after one day. Then a person asks the same question a few days later, and then another, and then another. So you have the same question posted dozens of times.

I'd just always assumed that's the case. I also read submarine books like the guy in the Progressive commercial.

It's been a while since I've read the cycling newsgroups, but I remember well the heyday when people like Sheldon Brown and Jobst Brandt posted regularly.

I'm guessing that if you want to sell a bike or parts, rec.bicycles.marketplace is not the best place to advertise any more.

Exactly, a few years older but similarly i could not have gained even a similar amount of knowledge using reddit.
