Same here.

Might have raced me in the early 90's? We used to come up and race at regattas held at Green Lake during the Summers between collegiate racing seasons.

Ditto here with Rowing. Had real troubles when steering Dad's boat and he'd say go to port. Finally just said port and left both have 4 letters, and remembered it that way. Also, this has been fascinating. My office window looks out on the Boston cargo terminal and most of these box boats are unbelievably massive. That and they can't maneuver worth a damn. 3 also large tugs are needed to get them back out to sea.

Me too. 9 years on the competitive circuit in HS and College. Also on the east coast and just a bit older than you are. Wonder if we ever raced against one another. I could "switch hit" reasonably well - my HS team broke down into small sculling boats over the summer for the club regattas and Canadian Henley which helped keep my muscle development balanced but preferred port if given the option when sweeping.

"Insufficient situational awareness" on the part of the Fitzgerald's crew.

That's bad news. Given how many different ways there are to see what's out there and to respond to the information they gather I'm guessing that there were a number of failures at a number of different levels.

Not just being relieved but also "Captain's Mast'/NJP for the CO and XO and senior enlisted and a 'dozen' others. Non judicial punishment..basically standing tall before a senior guy(probably the Commodore of the ship's battle group) and taking the punishment.

Crowded where they were...waiting for the good Captain to chime in..seems the oiler rammed the USNavy ship..bow to port side amidships. Burden on the USN ship Captain to prove he wasn't at fault..

I didn't read that particular article but is it referring to the possibility that the navigation or GPS systems on board may have been hacked? Maybe time to go old school and post a watch up in a crows nest.
