Arrow NBD: Gunnar Hyper-X (XC)

Hey everyone,

This is a delayed NBD, however at time of purchase, I was not yet a forum member. It's great to be involved with this group, so it's time I threw my hat in the ring.

This is a Gunnar Hyper-XC frame, in Parrot Green, custom geo with a blend of an
  • endurance road fit (SA 73 / HA 72)
  • gravel bike (tire clearance 700x40 / 650bx47)
  • tourer (chain stays 435)

It started life with QR dropouts, but just picked up a Steven Potts Type II-R fork (12mm thru), so I swapped on the Paragon Machine Works 12mm rear dropouts.

(Note to readers: The Steve Potts Type II-R fork is made in 2 versions -- mountain 47mm (419a-c) and road/gravel 47mm (401a-c).

The bike is 2x10, with:

  • SRAM Red 2012 2 x 10 (mechanical)
  • Shimano GRX 30/46 crankset -- a recent discovery
  • 11-36 cassette
  • SRAM Red Yaw FD
  • SRAM GX medium cage rear derailleur
  • TRP Spyre brakes
  • DT Swiss 350 hubs / Easton R90SL rims / Sapim Strong 2.2/1.8/2.0 3x
  • Panaracer Pasela TG 700x35

If any questions, of course feel free to ask, thanks for watching,

All the best,

-R

Dig the color. Post more glamour pics, especially that fork and the Paragon dropout stuff.

Hot bike, will you mostly ride gravel with this bike?

Not being very familar with Gunnar I totally expected this to be a mountain bike.

Nice bike!

80% urban / 20% gravel

The 35c makes cruising through most anything you could expect to encounter in urban environments pretty effortless. There's something that feels indestructible on medium width tires on 700c.

I rode for years on 23c, then 25c, and thought 28c was massive. Then I got a Kona Rove, and commuted on 32c, and liked that, my wheel / tire combo at that time were heavy and ponderous.

Getting the reasonably light Paselas on the Easton wheelset, which I built for the 28c Contis in one iteration, was a revelation.

I rode 38c Ramblers on gravel, which were quite good for 700c --- but then I tried 650b on my local roads. In my area, 'gravel' roads often are chunky crushed rock from logging trucks. For harder pack with loose small gravel over top, the 700c/38c+ combo would be the bees knees, and a bit faster.

I did try this... I actually was coasting along on my 700c / 38c wheelset, on a long converted train grade... switching a couple of weeks later to 650b, no coasting. Pretty unbelievable difference. Not sure I would have predicted this if asked previously.

Likely I will build a 650b wheel set for this exact bike for my off pavement excursions. The extra tire volume significantly improved the rougher terrain comfort.

Thanks for asking,

-R

Thank you! and... I hear you --

The 'Hyper-XC' is their nomenclature for Hyper-X (Convertible) owing to the Paragon dropouts.

Thanks -- I don't think my photos could compare with what Paragon or Steve Potts publishes, but I can try in a bit.
