Why did they feel the need to build walls and covers for the bridges? Did that help to preserve the base pieces longer???

Yes, the purpose is to keep the wooden trusses and deck from rotting due to weather. The covering can also reinforce the truss.

In addition, it prevented snow from building up on the deck, and prevented the hazards from horses slipping.

In 2012 BC (Before COVID), I rode the Covered Bridge Century. Forgive the picture quality, I think I had an iPhone Stone Age back then.

I believe the climb from Pavia to the Blue Knob summit has the most elevation gain of any single paved climb in PA, about 1700 feet. The climb up past Mt. Davis is close, but might be a little less (unless you take the gravel road to the summit, then it's more than BK). The average grade to the top of BK isn't too terrible though, about 7 to 8%. The other climb to the top of BK, up Overland Pass, has steeper sections, but has the same overall average, and only about 1500 ft gain. Last edited by steamer; 04-16-2021 at 06:50 AM. |

MY town had a covered bridge but it burned in 1965 and they never rebuilt it.

There is also this: https://www.bedfordcountychamber.com...edford-county/ The abandoned turnpike in Breezewood, and Flight 93 memorial, are not far away too. You could easily do a long weekend of road rides in that area with an entirely new aspect of the riding each day. |
