Tubeless rim tape

Hi all,
When using a 38c tire on a HED Belgium plus rim would a single wrap or tuneless tape work or definitely go double wrapped? I’m using orange seal tape and 35-40 psi for what that is worth. Thanks

The only way to know is to try it. Worst case scenario is you will have to clean and put another layer of tape on. This said, if you have enough tape in hand why not just wrap it twice and be done?

I would say always use 2 layers because you 'may' be caught out where ya gotta use a tube to get home.

Next time find some 8898 Scotch/3M brand 'tape''. Same as bike labeled stuff for less $.

I’ve used a gorilla tape (can’t recall name but can look if you are interested) and it worked well too. The nice thing about it is you can size the width for your rim (it’s oversized but once a small cut is made it will tear straight and remain the same width).

You always want two layers, it's what HED recommends as well.

My experience: Never ever used two layers. Either in my gravel bike (35 psi), nor in my road tubeless (68 psi) and nor in my mtb (18 psi). Always used one layer and it always has worked.

This.

Always 2 layers. Better seal for the rim/spoke holes, and a tighter fit for the bead.
10 sets of wheels, multiple brands, always 2 layers when running tubeless.

Somewhat related question - What if you're running non-tubeless tire (and tubes) on a tubeless-compatible rim?

I believe you're supposed to use tubeless tape, rather than regular rim tape. But do you still need two layers? Or can you get by with a single layer? (And would a single layer be preferred to make the tire fit a little looser so it's easier to install/remove? You don't need the tight fit for tubeless, right?)

The only unrepairable (on the road) flat I've had with my tubeless was due to the rim tape giving out over a spoke hole. I now do two passes with tape.

Official answer is 1 wrap for tubes, 2 for tubeless. However, I think you could get by with a little extra protection to your tubes from spoke holes with 2 wraps.

One if by land, two if by sea.

Why would it be different between tubes and tubeless? The tape not only has to be air-tight, but it also has to bear the pneumatic pressure. Tubes will take care of the air-tightness requirement, but they do next to nothing to alleviate the pneumatic pressure force.

The need to bear pressure is why 2 layers of tape are needed for high pressure tires, and only one layer is required for low pressure tires. This is regardless of whether or not tubes are used.

Here's a HED video about installing tube tape on HED Plus rims. They specify 2 layers of tape (even if using tubes).

Search for Kapton tape as rim tape. I use multiple layers for both tubed and tubeless for years now. The stuff is so thin and strong, not to mention adhesive very high temp rated.

I do use one layer of Pacenti tubless tape over kapton layers for tubeless over 50 PSI. Not that I prefer Pacenti tape, just not gone thru the ample supply I have...
