E-Unicycles too!
Wasn't expecting to see this today. Nice guy, he was doing a 35-40 mile loop on his e-unicycle on popular cycling roads. He checked his top speed for today: 48 mph. He also has another e-unicycle with more torque for off roading. I was impressed. He even had a Garmin Varia set-up.

I saw a group of these in Providence a couple of weeks ago.

Quite a few of those here in Toronto.
Some people wear helmets and gear, some just wear regular civilian clothes. I've yet to see someone wipe out on one of them. I have seen a guy on those electric stand up scooters and a few on the e-bikes take a tumble. |

I routinely see a guy (I think it's always the same guy) on a section of the bike path I use to get to Santa Monica, dressed like Darth Vader (ok, smaller helmet). I would have never thought to call that device a unicycle … unimoto?
Saw someone earlier this month beginning the descent from the top of Latigo Canyon Road (a ~10 mile fairly technical descent). I was going the opposite direction but was really tempted to follow him just to see how he handled the curves. Looked like fun. |

It is a ton of fun
I have an V8 inmotion EUC (electric uni cycle). I go slow. I have been thrown from my first gen one wheel. So I go super slow.
I off road EUC with my 11 year old on easy mtn bike trails. He rides our one wheel. Or I go to the park with my 8 year old. She is our most cautious. So our slow speeds match. I use a standard mtn bike helmet. But a full face is not a bad idea. They work like a one wheel or Segway. Self balancing. You lean forward it goes forward. Lean back it slows and brakes. Come visit Colorado Springs. We can spend an evening playing on the one wheel and EUC. I love the pace line forum. |

I recently saw an article about how people were being ticketed somewhere for riding these. Expensive tickets. Which makes sense, they are motorcycles and need a license and insurance. Which they probably can't get.
On edit: Okay, it was in BC, $500 tickets. There is an electric unicycle forum with a lot of posts about tickets. Last edited by unterhausen; 03-31-2024 at 11:19 PM. |

Riding my non-E unicycle (analog unicycle?), I don't like to ride faster than I can run it out, in case of an UPD (unplanned dismount). I can't fathom 47mph.

A guy died crashing on one of these on a bike path in my city (Melbourne, Australia) a few weeks ago. Too much speed going around a bend. Cyclists two abreast coming the other direction who he tried to avoid, at least that is what was reported. A guy from my office saw paramedics doing CPR on him shortly after it happened.
The E-Unicyle seems inherently dangerous to me, just looking at them, but maybe I am wrong. For those who have ridden one, how stable do they feel? |
