As a GREAT summer read, I'm re-reading Pete Beatty's hilarious novel "Cuyahoga." So witty, with wonderfully written language and dialogue, and just such a great ending that made me almost fall out of my beach chair.

Strongly recommended!

I'm reading a newish book that covers ground from my "professional" historical interests--but it is well-written and would be a good read for anyone interested in the large question about how Europe became the economic powerhouse of the world. He looks at the first big set of changes with the Reformation, global exploration etc... It's by no means the whole story, but he tells it well by focusing on 10 key individuals (like Christopher Columbus) to make his points:

I just finished 'The Storm Is Upon Us' by Mike Rothschild. It's a pretty good analysis of the Q movement and how people get trapped into conspiracy theories.

Just finished Serhii Plokhy's The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine. Accessible but scholarly read by a Ukrainian historian at Harvard outlining not just Ukraine's history, but the development of its distinct national identity. It was written after the 2014 war in eastern Ukraine and lays much of the intellectual groundwork for the war today.

Just finished Spies, Lies, and Exile by Simon Kuper.

An historical account of George Blake, who fought with the Dutch Resistance during WWII. He later joined MI6 and was stationed in Korea. When the N.Korean army overran his post he was taken as a POW. While imprisoned he switched sides and became a Soviet double agent.

The author, Kuper, has written some good soccer books as well.
