That made me think back to my peewee days and the enforcement of a 'slaughter-rule'. Obviously, one didn't exist here.
Since this is OT, at what point does a person or group of people say, "The heck with this!" and walk away? What's wrong with us (humans) that our need to win/punish is so great. Are we born that way or is it learned? There was an experiment conducted, and repeated, and always with the same conclusion - the desire to win can overcome common-sense. Briefly, here's the experiment: a group bids on a $20 bill. The only catch is that the person with the second highest bid has to pay the amount of his bid when s/he loses (hence, s/he doesn't want to lose). Most people stop bidding at the $12 mark. But, in every experiment, two people take the bidding way beyond $20. The record? $240 (for a $20 bill!!). I think this helps explain the actions of guys in our Tuesday night club ride!! |

There was a thread a while back, on this forum, about lopsided victories in sports. The overwhelming consensus was that teams should never stop scoring, or "take their foot off the throttle."
(FWIW, I disagree with that notion.) edit: added link to thread
