Pretty sad. I was hoping that he would come in with $ and draw some talent in his first season. It appears that most of the talent has come off the market!

I thought I just read that Cervelo was involved with sponsoring his team. Everyone's wondering who he'll be driving for now that Vettel has taken his spot on Ferrari.

When he failed to seize the opportunity to take over Euskaltel, I pretty much wrote him off as another big talker....

From what I've read, Alonso walked because Euskatel wouldn't sell without management coming along for the ride. He wanted the riders and infrastructure, he just didn't want the "bosses". Given their lack of results, I can see why Alonso wanted to install his own management. Euskatel management killed the team and cost people a lot of jobs.

In other news, Alonso has more on his plate now that he won't be driving for Ferrari next year. He's going to need all his energy trying to get along with Ron Dennis. He wants another driver's title more than a cycling team.

from the F1 perspective

may sit out 2015 season allowing him to focus on cycling:

"Bicycle racing site Cycling Quotes claims that Alonso has scored a 20 million Euro investment to launch a new cycling team that will campaign Cervelo bikes in next year's WorldTour series."

Once they announced that they planned on using Cervelo bikes, it was likely impossible for them to get any riders to sign...

Perhaps he was very serious, but the dramas and barriers to entry in cycling were just too much in the time allowed. Recently it seems as though it is easier to just buy a team that is failing or in trouble than it is to start up a new one (he said from the start he wanted to do an all new structure).

I do not think he would have made the recent deal with the investment entity if he still was not serious.

He is a little busy as he and Vettel are each trying for an $80 million deal in F1.
