Merckx MX Leader -- Vlaanderen 2002 Team Bike

Not sure whether this belongs in custom bikes or production bikes, as it's a essentially custom production bike... more specifically, a Merckx MX Leader Vlaanderen 2002 Team bike, with custom Freuler geometry. Specs are as follows --

Seat tube is 61 cm c-to-c
Top tube is 60 cm c-to-c
Head tube is 20 cm t-to-b

The stock 61 cm MX Leader with century geometry has a 58.8 cm top tube and an 18.5 cm head tube. So this was tweaked for someone on that squad. Wonder who ?

It's in nice shape, has some paint touch-ups as expected and unfortunately has a small dent on the top tube. I'd try and fix the small dent, but can't see how without sacrificing the paint. Thinking about where I want to go with the build, it will either be period-correct, or neo-retro with a period look.

Forgive the pic quality -- Better ones to follow. Banana for yellow team bikes

The big question... Campy or Shimano?

My MX Leader has worn both (10 speed Record, various combinations of 11 speed Ultegra/DA/105) and Shimano just feels right.

Wow! Wouldn’t mind doing a seasonal exchange between this one and my Colnago Master when the time is right...

I vote for Chorus 10 - wait, was that an option?

I'm pretty much a Campagnolo guy, but that Dura Ace group would look very proper on this. Damn sweet bike!!!

That's my all time favourite livery. Congrats - I'm super duper jealous. Can't wait to see the build.

Thanks!

Yes, I gave it a polish and it cleaned up really nice. Very minimal paint damage on it, one very small dent on the down tube. Chrome doesn't have any pitting. Seems like it wasn't ridden much... and was kept out of the elements (no rule #9)

The Vlaanderen team bike on the other hand is, well, what you might expect from a team bike that was raced hard... (definitely #5 and #9)
