Not much story to it. I love old racing bikes with chevron paint schemes. I sent Joe Bell a description of the colors I was looking for and a photo of a Eddy Merckx with a great design. I asked for a particular blue. red and yellow. I remember there was a restored Willys Americar around town that had this wonderful blue. I got the paint formula from the owner and sent it to Joe. Joe decided to include the white and I disliked the design when Dave sent me the first photo. But when it arrived...Holy Moses, it was beautiful.
I built it up with Campy Chorus 11spd (this was 2013), H+Son TB14s on White Industries T11s, and various bits off my previous bike. It does everything I want my bike to do: climbs efficiently, corners as well as I can handle and doesn't twitch like my previous bikes. Unfortunately, I got lost a few times and ended up on some gravel. I did a lot of gravel, actually. The bike ate it up but suffered some paint chips. I'm looking to send it back to Joe soon for a repaint. Maybe I'll change it up. I don't have any photos of it but I'll take one next time I'm out in the sun. |

I was digging through older photos and came across these and for some reason I like them....and of course a photo of the kindest creature on the planet, our Manx cat Pearl, is always appreciated.

That second to last pic should be a poster! Really cool with the way the front frame is in focus and the blurring of the frames behind.

Here's a new ride that pays homage to work I did a full 3 decades ago (that feels odd to type if I'm honest). It's a JK Special X built with double-oversize tubes and classic lugged construction.
As I was prepping this bike I was struck by how similar in appearance and concept that it is to the bikes I built for the Coors Pro Team way back when. They are both lugged steel so that there's that. But after that they are much different. The modern Reynolds 953 main tubes are 1/2 the thickness of the tubes that we used 30 years ago....so they weigh less, give a sweeter ride and are just as stiff. The tubes are low temperature silver brazed (as opposed to brass brazed) together to give the frame lifetime fatigue resistance for a lifetime of use. The alignment is tighter, the geometry more refined and I like to think that 30 years of skill building means that they are better crafted. As proud as I am of the work I did for Serotta and the Coors Light Team I'm more proud of the bikes I build today. I'm excited to see this one out on the road being used hard the way it was intended. dave |
