Almost ready for translucent red, this one is personal, as I'll be personally putting it through its paces. Stay tuned for the final build.....

The little details....

10-12 layers of clear for this frame, sanded back down to bare carbon by hand between every layer. Basically a clear filler that adds no weight. From there, 4-5 color layers, then 3 more coats of clear. I'm doing a translucent red, but from what Kevin mentioned, some paint jobs get 30 plus layers.

Moving on.....for now.

For those that may or may not know, Kevin, the builder at Cryptic Cycles, not only a fantastic frame builder and world class photographer to say the least, has decided to take on a once in a lifetime opportunity as a full time photographer. While he has done most of the photo shoots for Shimano, he will continue doing so, while traveling the country and presenting some of the best real-life insights into this crazy sport we love.

Those that don't know, Kevin won the best new builders award at NAHBS a few years back, and will take his expertise into his new challenge. Those that were at NAHBS this year may or may not have seen him taking photos, albeit while one of his gravel bikes was at the Shimano booth.

While my primary business model revolves around importation from Europe, since I've lived and raced there, I will never overlook what the states have to offer. Having a strong relationship with Kevin and his passionate goals, my main goal here was to give everyone some insight of what it takes to build a true, handmade frame, and of course bring attention to Cryptic. I hope that is has and has inspired others. For those that have reached out to me with questions, many thanks!

There are some amazing builders here in the states that should not go un-noticed. Kirk, Crumpton, AR Cycles, etc. Whatever material you choose to ride, make the call.

Best of luck to Kevin in his new adventure.

Cheers,
Eric

Sad news that Kevin won't be producing fine carbon fiber rides in the foreseeable future but best of luck to him in this new endeavor.

Thanks William! Translucent red applied for my build. More clear to follow. Will look like glass and worth every second of the wait. Talent beyond belief. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Cryptic.

I love the effect of translucent paint over materials, especially this carbon. Can't wait for the build photos.

Thanks Aaron!

The build will include the custom wrapped Enve bar with MCFK stem, as well as a custom painted Berk. While it may seem too over the top, the components and wheels should add some contrast.
