Giro d'Italia Donne 2022 - spoilers

Unbelievably sparse crowd for the opening TT today. It was along the coast of Sardinia, so headwinds every which way, but Kristen Faulkner still managed 49 kph over the very short 4.7 km course.

Despite Faulkners excellent start today, and an amazing ride in stage four of the Tour de Suisse (and I like her a lot!), I am going for Marta Cavalli for overall GC. Marta looked good in the TT and she has a strong team. Word on the street is CUL will be working for her, and Brodie Chapman is a good combo with Marta. Thats my prediction!

Cavalli's been riding really well, but don't count out my favorite female rider, Annemiek van Vleuten! She can't outsprint anyone, but will try rip their legs off before the sprint or die trying, as she did at LBL earlier this year. 39 years old, and just announced that she's retiring after next season.

Chapman can really work on the flats. Don't know how good she is in the mountains.

Oh, no, one can never discount AVV! Tho she did admit “the wins are coming harder.”

It should be a great Giro.

Stage 4

I came back from a ride and found the stage already over. Watching it was a nice way to cool down..

It was the first hilly, if not true mountain stage. Two Cat 3, a Cat 2, and an unclassified climb near the finish.

Van Vleuten, Cavalli, and Mavi Garcia go off the front, forming a high powered break on the Cat 2 climb and build their lead all the way to the finish, putting 4 minutes or more into the likes of Balsamo, Longo Borghini, and Vos.

On the last two climbs Van Vleuten repeatedly attacked, which is her normal way of shedding riders. I was surprised to see Cavalli dropped, although she almost came back. AVV then outsprinted a fresher looking Garcia for the stage win.

Big shakeup, with the big mountains still to come.
