I did thoroughly enjoy this car though and it could dissuade me from the 4x4 bent...maybe. W. |

I think he’s trying to say that since Canada is less restrictive cars were being imported to Canada and now that these cars are 25 years old you can import them to the US from Canada instead of having to import from japan

I lived in Japan for a year, Okinawa as a US Marine - I loved it. From my gear head buddies that all wanted to send their Skylines and Preludes home, the hardest part was converting the fuel line system and several other items with the fuel delivery and door beams for crash strength. It was very expensive and none of them were able to do it. $6k car was about $6k to pass inspection and shipping. Then the US insurance was pretty high for a RSD vehicle. Took me months to stop getting in the passenger side, btw. Cool times though!

Canada is more restrictive in some matters and less restrictive in other things. Cars have to be at least 15 years to avoid smog and such regulations. In the US the rule is 25 years. In 2001, I brought in two cars when I moved from Italy to the US: a 1954 Fiat and a 1974 Alpine Renault. Getting insurance was the biggest problem that I had, especially for the Alpine as it was never officially imported. We will be moving to Canada later this year and many recent cars need to have daylight running lights installed, km speedometer, immobilizer and ISO-fix child seat fittings.

I would hardly call those mods restrictions. You can install DRLs and the speedometer in a couple hours. I don’t know what an immobilizer is and child seats seems easy enough. The smog restrictions are extremely expensive fixes if the car doesn’t pass. Insurance is another story. But then again my tolerance for doing car work is pretty high |

Here you go, William: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1991-Mitsub...A/183863173620
I owned a Toyota LE 4x4 van for a few years and loved it. Hard to work on with the engine placement, however. |

You could always just get a land cruiser instead of some Japanese beast that might be hard to get parts for, just an idea.

AFAIK, the 25 yr federal rule never really had anything to do with safety or emissions, but was the result of carmakers lobbying for a way to crack down on gray market importers that were beginning to cut into their dealerships' business in the late 80's. That's why it is virtually impossible to circumvent, even for the persistent and well-intentioned.

Well, in that case carry on and live the JDM dream!
I always wanted a 60 series but I got my 80 for basically free and now I'm stuck with it |
