Car struck a house and killed the resident.
I prefer “negative encounter:”

Greg Knapp's murderer free of criminal charges

The San Ramon Police Department's investigation has concluded and it was submitted for review. We received official word from the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office that they will not be filing criminal charges on the driver involved in the collision

Extremely disappointed by the DA here. I wonder if this 22 year old is well connected since the media won't even release his name.

How to get away with murder: wait until person goes on a bike ride and then run them over.

Seems to work every time.

So, how does this work that the driver doesn't get named? Can a lawyer answer (other than well connected). Same news source gives names for purse robberies:
Anthony Michael Robinson, 24, of Stockton; Derje Damond Blanks, 23, of San Jose; and Cameron Alonzo Moody, 27, of East Palo Alto have been arrested and charged in connection with the crimes." https://www.danvillesanramon.com/new...ed-asian-women

I think it's as simple as a lawyer filing paperwork and a judge granting the request. There could be numerous reasons for that request ... fwiw. I am not a lawyer.

You are kidding…yet not really kidding. It seemingly is never punished.
Get a couple degrees of plausible separation and have driver sob:
"OMG, they came out of nowhere and I didn't see them! I'm so sorry!"

Sorry I can't answer your question. I can point out, though, that the article you cite describes both arrests and charges being made. I've not read the entire thread, but apparently neither ever happened in this case. If I recall correctly, officers said that neither drugs nor alcohol were involved when Knapp was struck. But how far did they pursue the distracted driving theory?

A lady I know of was knocked off her bike because the driver was late for her tee time. The driver actually went on to the GC which was near by (thus leaving the seen) Probably called her husband and was told to return to the seen. No charges... no ticket.. nothing. You can thank the Pleasanton Police dept for that one.

if you really want to know why the name wasnt released, contact the investigating agency and find out if their policy is to no release names when no criminal charges are filed

as to whether or not charges ought to be filed..... prosecutors like to file charges, so when they dont, its usually because there was no crime. i know a lot o you dudes here on PL seem to think its open season on bikes, but the fact o the matter is most crashes arent criminal.... so most crashes dont involve charges. its no different for bikes - but sadly cyclists are a lot less likely to survive em crashes than peeps in cars. however, whether or not a cyclist does or doesnt survive or is injured badly or not has ZERO bearing on whether a crime was committed AND the state can prove it in court.

the system has problems, sure, but it does work folks

i dont like this attitude of an assumption of guilt some of you guys put on drivers any goddamn time a cyclist is hit. we arent some special protected class - hitting us isnt, in the eyes of the law, any more demanding of charges than hitting anyone else, all else equal. it either is or isnt a crime, and nobody up in this bitch was there, or an investigator on the case, im betting.

gotta come to terms with your mortality. you ARE going to die. might be on your bike. charging motorists when they havent committed crimes isnt going to have ANY impact on whether you die on your bike or in an armchair watching jeopardy.

do you understand that criminal liability and civil liability are totally different things?
