eTap and Gravel: not as bad as advertised

When I built my gravel Mosaic frame with eTap HRD the framebuilder, the shop and few people in various forums warned me about the potential interference of wider tires with the back of the FD battery.

Because of that I initially opted for a conservative 30c tire. But given how much clearance I saw I then mounted a set of 35c Compass Bon Jon Pass. Today I pushed it a bit further and installed a set of 38c Compass Barlow Pass..

And it still clears with about shy of 3mm of clearance.

For reference my chainstays are 420mm long. I would expect longer wheelbase frames to clear even wider tires no problem.

So in essence eTap does work with gravel bike and wider tires.

Aside from the clearance win, how does the eTap drivetrain work for rough terrain?

The chain bounces on the stay over rough terrain.. not too much but more pronounced compared to Rival 1 RD.

Also as I noted in other posts, eTap is the worst performer when it comes to shifting under torque.

Having said that, the 11-32 cassette is sweet

I had the opposite experience with eTap under load but this was on 2 different road bikes, haven't tried it off road yet. I know that 32 is the max they say it'll support but I'm hoping to get away with a 34T.

Not sure why it’s taking them so long to do 1x12 etap cx1. Seriously. All they need is a derailleur... ***.

I’m hoping the Aqua Blue squad running the Strada will prompt SRAM to make the announcement and subsequent release for the pros to have before mass release. Perhaps before the Tour Down Under?

How tight is the Barlow Pass under the fork? I would love to see a pic of that end.

fwiw, cyclocross world champion is on it, has been for two seasons. won world championship on it. it's been fine. he did have some chain dropping problems when he first went to it. this was attributed to his mechanics setting it up poorly and a newly designed Colnago he was on not playing nice with it. eventually the issue went away, and he's also switched bike sponsors since then (to Felt). I can't recall him dropping a chain in about a season and a half now.

Was about to mention Wout. I think several SRAM sponsored riders use it for cross.
