FedEx Home Shipping Rates

I recently shipped a road bike in a standard bike box, front wheel removed, rear wheel in dropout, and calculated the cost at around $90.

South Florida to SoCal.

FedEx charged me $185 (after bike had shipped, not at the counter). Seems a bit high...

Next time I will use bikeflights!

Oh, yeah.

BikeFlights coast to coast is around $75 each way depending on pickup, dropoff and insurance charges.

It sounds as if you got dinged for oversize charges. I always take a picture of the box with a tape measure verifying the length, width and height. FedEx always rounds up to the nearest inch, so 6-1/4 = 7. I believe that FedEx is now using lasers to measure the dimensions of the packages. You may be able to dispute the charges if it was a standard bike box, that was not oversized.

Edit, from FDX:

The Oversize Charge will apply to any FedEx Express U.S. package or FedEx Ground® package exceeding 96 inches in length or 130 inches in length and girth. Rating for an Oversize package will be based on the greater of the package’s actual rounded weight or dimensional weight, subject to a 90-lb. minimum billable weight.

I just had a brief conversation with Fedex and they knocked a substantial amount off the cost.

In the future I will use bikeflights!

I cant believe we are still having this discussion! Ha.

1 - wheels/bikes/frames = bikeflights (fedex) or USPS Parcel Select if shipping locally
----> bikeflights insurance = $1.25/$100, residential delivery = +$5

2 - everything else = USPS
----> use FLAT RATE PACKAGING whenever possible, it'll save you a boatload of money sometimes if shipping multi-LB packages cross-country.

NEVER BUY POSTAGE/LABEL AT THE COUNTER
---->unless you are made of money

Yep. This, unfortunately, was a $400 bike. 1990ish low end Colnago.

I bought it 15 years ago for about that, left it at my inlaws in Florida for riding when I was there, and since I haven't ridden it in years, figured it was time to let it go...

I was hoping to get more for it, but frankly, the buyer paid a fair price...

So there's a significant dollar difference versus purchasing online?

A note, BikeFlights will ship any size box, not just a 'bike'...same restrictions(weapons, ammo) type stuff but set up an account, get label emialed to you..take to FedEx..

Yes. Enormous.

Buy FedEx labels from bikeflights.com
It doesn't have to be a bike you're shipping.
