best gps unit for europe (italia)?

I have an older but fully functional wahoo and garmin, and am currently using a karoo2 here, my favorite gps unit yet.

Is there any advantage to one of these over the other in the old country? I'm going to want to create some routes and have access to maps.

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.

I once used a very old Wahoo (pre-bolt). It was ok. Now that I have the Bolt2, I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to use it for this. Roads are roads, and it works great here so I can't imagine why it wouldn't there. Just to keep it easy, I'd probably try to load all the routes before leaving

Karoo 2 is great; I swap between that and my Garmin 820. Either one can load the continental maps that you would need, so I think you'd be OK.

My understanding is that any head unit is just fine, you just need to make sure you download the appropriate maps prior to your visit.

Ive had no issues with my OG element and only slightly newer first gen Roam in Italy. The caveat is I have to free up space for downloaded maps by deleting other areas/countries. Once I do that in the wahoo app my routes run flawlessly. In France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, and Czech Republic thus far.

Last year while mountain biking with a friend in France he was using his Karoo 2 and said it was the best thing since sliced bread. Given its newer and higher tech I would probably recommend that.

What I’m really curious about is this new Coros unit with the undying battery.

Rest assured all the europe based cyclists use the same satnav devices as you guys do, Garmin, Wahoo, Karoo etc. I use my Bolt together with Komoot and occasinally with Strava. No issue.

Older Garmins don’t have free maps outside the region they were purchased in. You may need to download an OSM map. DC Rainmaker has instructions. Sounds complicated but it’s quite simple.
