I'd considered a belt drive, but the cog/belt/ring combo is expensive and would continue to add up if I wanted to swap things out. Also, in order to have clearance for the belt drive chainring, you'd have to do some weird stuff to the chainstay. Scallop it, yoke it, or make some odd structural bends so the ring can clear. Nothing that Steve was particularly keen on doing given the nature of the project. And....chains work perfectly well!

Why no belt drive?
my Spot frame is belt ready but sports a metal chain like yours

Yo! I'm might be down for a Townie 100k. We're actually doing a Townie PopDart for the Davis Dart in September. "No drop bars allowed!"

Belt would have been interesting but A) the cog on an Alfine huybsits fairly far inboard which then B) drives the chainring inboard too which then forces the builder to C) make clearance in the chainstay for that wide of a ring, either by doing some really awkward bends, cutting a scallop in the stay and welding a plate over it, or using some kind of yoke. The former and latter would have lengthened the chainstays as well. I also wasn't sure what gearing I'd want to run. If I went belt and then changed my mind on the gearing, I'd be out of pocket even more money. The classic "chain" system allows for more flexibility. And chains work. I like chains. And there's already a bit of drag in the hub itself. I understand you have to run belts fairly tight which would probably feel like even more resistance.

At any rate, too many variables and not enough justification to go belt other than the novelty factor for me anyway.

Can I ask what the bars are? (If I didn't miss it somewhere along the way.) Looking for something similar for my wife's town bike.
