Bike Storage - most efficient use of space

This is what I have so far. It works, but would be great if I could fit more bikes in same space. Any ideas for a different approach? maybe a hanging a bar with hooks that slide instead. Like clothes closet.

That's the method I use in my basement bike room. I hang the hooks 12" on center, with the wheels resting against the wall. Alternate the bikes bars up/bars down. Having them on a sliding bar just invites them to get tangled up and a major pain to get out if they decide to be difficult, IMHO.

if you want to be really efficient side-to-side, you might need to space them in both height and distance from the wall. I tried getting them closer in my garage, and it was really annoying getting a bike out. I keep thinking up different ways to store them, but so far I haven't come up with one that doesn't involve giant robots.

Thanks for the input. A 2x4 underneath will let me space hooks 12 inches apart as suggested. That will move them closer together. I may also be able to roll additional bikes in between the hanging bikes.

I store stuff between the bikes. Plenty of space for that, just tricky to store bikes in there. For example, my push mower is under the bikes. Hanging from the back wheel isn't as easy because of the front wheel flopping around and not helping raise the bike. I have long thought about building a system where the bikes roll onto rails on the ground and then flip up to the wall. Someone sells something like that, but it's expensive per bike.

A bike hook that hinges is the best use of space. You can build your own or get something like the feedback sports hook (rotates 90°) or steadyracks (180°).
I have a couple of steadyracks, which were quite expensive to be honest. The hinges allow the bikes to rotate away from the adjacent bikes, making loading and unloading much easier.

Steadyrack solution looks very nice, but $79.99 per bike.
Hooks in picture cost $1.79 each. They do swivel 360 degree before coming out though

This thread is gold. Reminds me that I had trouble with the search using ‘bike storage’. Thank you for providing the link.

Damn, I followed your thread link there and next thing I knew I had mistakenly replied to that old thread instead of this one.
At least now it's bumped and updated, so maybe worth a look (to page 5 where I replied).
