Lets see how he feels in 3 years...

  • Not wanting to invest in something new, that will feel dated 'out of the box'.
  • Future proofing your build... what if some emergent tech comes along that you just "have to have"?
  • Some folks love upgrading to the new thing every version (not me) but I know that exists, in your scenario you could be stuck in an "era".
  • In some rare instances, newer (tech) actually is in fact much better (discs vs cantis for example)

On the flip side, I could offer the rebuttal, I don't understand the line of thinking of not adopting the current "just because contrarianism" if you are in fact making the investment (vs unnecessarily upgrading/chasing the new bobble). What would someone be afraid of, discs are just one day going to inexplicably stop working, therefore better to use what's worked (and evolved itself) over the last 50 years? However, if you have an absolute vision as to why, some Neo-retro dream, of course, do what you want. But just to be a contrarian voice? If you're going to flex there, do it with something needed and important unlike bike frames.

Keep in mind, I just came back from a ride on a '93 Rossin with Record 10. So, these are not necessarily my positions, but those positions are totally understandable.

I had a buddy 3 years ago who got a custom built gravel bike that he was hell bent on getting with Canti's and no thru axle. I told him he'd be a fool in 3 years if he did that. 3 years later... he'd be the first to tell you the same.
