Thin the herd?

Was at my LBS today and my buddy that works there asked "have you thinned the herd yet?" When my mother comes to visit I always get the "why don't you get rid of these bikes!" I did, at one time , thin the herd somewhat - but I just went ahead and plumped out the herd once again.. Bikes are my "thing" everyone has a "thing".They make me happy. I don't race, I'm not fast, I barely have time to ride and the dust collects on most of them but I just love bikes..they're mechanical devices that have life and personality and history, bikes can take you places even when you're not riding them..

All that matters is that they bring you joy. People collect all kinds of other things. Bikes are your tchotchkes.

You have a herd. I have a revolving door. We both love bikes. There are no right answers. Do what brings you joy. Share that joy with others. It's all good.

Oh wait, are they 58.5-59cm TT ??? My answer may change..

That’s a very eloquent defense. Not necessarily convinced I won’t thin the herd, but your words have merit. The last two lines represent a pretty stirring closing argument. Well done.

It’s like my weight. It’s goes up. It’s goes down. Rarely is it perfect though.

Thus the never ending quest.

Sold a few nice bikes and frames off at the start of the lockdown. It felt a little cathartic.

Also started a list of bikes I could never part with - my first custom frame, the Gios I flew to Turin to collect that sort of thing. Thought I was getting somewhere.

Slipped a little a week or so ago and bought a Merkcx Corsa Extra. It's hard.

Lightbulb

Chilling-out in the bicycle room feels good just to work on them and clean them.
It is not just the countless miles piled upon them over the decades and decades.

When you think about it, having a few extra bikes lying around is a pretty cheap "thing", even with high end bikes.

Suppose you liked fishing and owned a simple, center console boat, say 19', to go out fishing and take the family out on the water. Great boats. You would probably spend more in one season just to run the boat than you would on all your bikes, especially if you got your bikes by cruising the classifieds and reusing parts.

Enjoy your bikes. If anybody gives you *****, tell them you could be hanging out at strip joints and spending money on hookers and blow.

Note: Once again, I'm amazed that in a forum frequented by mature adults, I can't use another word for feces.

Herd is up to Spinal Tap, Klein needs a new home to get back to ten. Jury is still out on the Bilenky tandem, we haven't hardly ridden that. With the exception of the old Raleigh 20 folder, which has very targeted and minimal use, the rest get ridden and thoroughly enjoyed.

One benefit of my increased mileage due to COVID-19 is they are each getting reasonable usage!

Unlike a herd of cattle, a herd of bicycles costs nothing in upkeep if you don't use them (besides the space they take up).

One of my bicycles I had used perhaps once every couple of years, and I kept thinking of selling it. Now it's my daily commuter.

My response to people who ask me why I need more than one bicycle is "why do you need more than one pair of shoes?"
