When I consider a movie epic, I usually end the movie a bit changed with a feeling of having really been through time and experience. I am maybe a bit worn out.
I fully agree with No Country for Old Men. My other submission would be Requiem for a Dream. The juxtaposition of intense hope and despair, with such a raw style felt epic to me… like I had been through something substantive. |

Interstellar is pretty epic IMO. Despite the last act the theater experience was quite epic.

Epic is different than “one if the best movies I’ve seen”
So many good ones listed and not much to add, but epic has to cover a lot of ground to be considered epic. For me go to epic is always Star Wars New dune is the $hit, along with blade runner2049. Villenueve is killing it. Dune was epic where blade runner was just really well done. Interstellar is awesome, if you can allow the survivability. I also like Lawrence of Arabia. That is epic old done right, IMO. I have a hard time with the new superhero movies and the expansive “anything goes” special effects. Other less epic contenders for me include: the hunter. the bear was good too. Summer spring winter fall is pretty damn epic. Need to watch that one again.

Some good suggestions here that I'll have to hunt down, eg Blade Runner 2047.
If I were to expand upon what "epic" means to me, eg movies you walk away from and think about for days, but also have a grand sense about them, agree with others on: Lord of the Rings Dune Pulp Fiction Gladiators Star Wars and adding Blue Velvet Forgot to add... Nearly anything from Kurosawa but my all time fav of his is Ran. Many in this thread have asked what I meant with term "epic" Ran epitomizes epic for me. Grand, brilliant musical score, great scriptwriting, exquisite photography. And if we delve into the realm of animation... I'm more curious how OP is defining "epic"?
...because if we go by the dictionary definition ("relating to or characteristic of a long poem, typically one derived from ancient oral tradition, narrating the deeds and adventures of heroic or legendary figures or the history of a nation") it seems like it's pretty easy to do "epic" in this day and age: - a troubled/conflicted protagonist who reluctantly assumes the Hero role - some enormous and/or dangerous vistas/settings, and a ton of extras (all trivially achieved via CGI btw) - a story steeped in myth, or with parallels to actual mythology or mythological behavior -- aka, death-defying super-powers I basically described every action-adventure movie made in the last ~30 years. But I'm not sure I would ever refer to Die Hard 3 as an "epic" film. |
