Nice budget. Since I own steel and Ti bikes a nice Carbon bike used would be nice to try.

A person could go crazy with a question like that, personally I would never ride a $6,000 bike, it's impractical and a waste of money, there are a lot of bikes out there for half that cost that will do 98% of what a $6,000 bike will do.

So I'll play along with the $6,000 thing, I really like my Lynskey, so I would probably opt for a higher grade R470, it's a tad over $6,000 but since it's on sale for $3,937 I would upgrade to Ultegra, Enve 2.0 fork, Cane Creek 110 headset, Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels, and etched Lynskey graphics, which puts me just under the $6000 limit.

In reality I wouldn't never buy that Lynskey, I would save a ton of money and get their Backroad touring bike, a go anywhere do anything bike.

I'd take that money and bug Mitch Pryor at MAP to build a Rambonneur frameset for me. Not sure that $6,000 would cover the whole shebang, but it'd be a whale of a start.

If that didn't work, Eric Estlund at Winter would be my next choice. I love this bike on his Flickr. Looks like a bike that I would like to own if I had the bucks.

That winter is way north of $6K. And man she is an incredible bike.

I changed my mind, I am going to say a David Kirk Onesto with Ultegra R8000. I showed my wife the frame and even she said approved (and she couldn't care less about bikes).

The reason I can accomplish this is through luck, patience, knowing exactly what I want, creative sourcing, driving old used cars, cash at hand and ready to buy anytime, and most importantly with the help and generosity of this community (PSA galore!) and my local co-op. I am only sharing this information to make a point that I have always believed in and trying to make whenever I can - you don't have to always go through the traditional routes, there are many other alternatives out there if you care to look or are willing to explore. Be adventurous, willing to take a bit of risk, learn how to build a wheel or do your own wrenching, and lastly, be creative.

WTB or patiently wait and stalk the classifieds for the frameset by a decent builder or company, here. Piece together (with WTBs or patiently wait and stalk the classifieds) a Campy group, here. Ditto cockpit/finishing kit/wheels. I've done it over a dozen times, putting gorgeous bikes together worth much more than $6K often for much less than half that, through the fine, generous people on this forum.

Ryun' Crumpton

Late to the party but if I could fit a 56 and had 6k of bike money I would lowball Ryun by 500 bucks and snag his Crumpton.

LaPierre Aircode SL 800 for $5K or SL900 for $6K

I've been really interested in the Aircode. The entire range consists of a single, top flight aero carbon frame ridden by FDJ team including Pinot. The equipment spec for the price is quite amazing. The SL800 has DA 9100 with direct mount rim brakes and Mavic Cosmic Pro SL carbon wheels (and tires), a Zipp SC stem and more. Its also available as a frame/fork only.

Unfortunately, there is no North American dealer, so its an online purchase with no test ride possible. The reviews the past years have been quite positive (FWIW). Damn, its a sweet looking bike!
