Rim choice for 36h Nuovo Record hubs
I had the wheels on my Gios built shortly after I bought the bike, though I had the front rebuilt several years ago using a Mavic Open Sport (this was before I discovered The Paceline and simply took the suggestion of the builder at my LBS).
That makes the rear more than 40 years old, and for Eroica I'd like to have it rebuilt. My cursory search indicates that it may be hard to find a matching Open Sport. So… Does anyone have a line on a 36 hole Open Sport? What would you recommend as the best alternative? Should I bite the bullet and have the front rebuilt to match? thanks |

Gios deserves tubulars like a gp4 or a nisi in dark color :P

In fact, the front was originally a sew-up. Since I'm considering switching to tubs on my Peg this could be workable, but now we're talking much more serious money than just a new clincher rim and rebuild… |

If you're going to switch to tubulars, you can find get a nice set of GP4's on Record hubs for around $100 on Craigslist (if you're patient).

Personally I think that bike needs low profile rims....TB14s to be exact. I had a set of wheels built with them for my Frejus and they look perfect on it IMO.
But if you want to just do the one and if the rim is silver.... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mavic-Open-...HWl6:rk:5:pf:0

I also have a pair of NOS Mavic MA-2s in 36 holes, if you’re interested.

I'm not keen on the idea of mixing clincher and tubular, so if I commit I'd need 2 rims. There's a guy who has a lot of 11 tubular rims listed with the auction starting at $0.99 and no bids, sent a note asking if he'd separate out the two GP4s. |

if you are hard on wheels, pick Mavic's mach2cd2.

I believe clinchers shouldn´t even be allowed on Eroica. If it is strict regarding shifting and pedals what´s the point of running anything but tubulars?

But to your point: isn't the cutoff date ~1987? Clinchers were pretty widely available and used by the early 80s. That said, cost aside I would prefer to ride tubulars in Eroica just for keeping with the spirit. |

If you want to go tubular, I would get a pair of vintage Mavic GP-4 as a first choice. Especially with 36 spokes, a well-built set of these will be very stable and very durable.
If you want to go clincher, I'd go for a pair of Mavic MA-40 or similar rim. On my bikes I have both of these varieties with 32 spokes and they have both been very durable, when built well. With 36 spokes per wheel they will be even better. Don't be foolish riding over bumps or through potholes, and they will last a LOOOONG time. |

What about clinchers makes them unreasonable for Eroica? They were very widely used on vintage steel bikes, and are hardly modern tech.
