Ha, the infamous join the training ride of your favorite pro team when they come to town scene, only to have one of them stuff your pump through your spokes. Ouch! No spaghetti for dinner tonight mom, I’m not feeling very “Italian” today.

I'd like to put together a definitive list of the most lust-worthy road, mountain, track and BMX bikes.

TIA!
Without reading what the others have written, as not to get distracted, mostly track bikes come to mind as they tend to have a unique shilouette. Most notably:

- Mosers hour record bike with the giant rear disc

- "Textima" track bike used by GDR elite athletes (wanna take this fella on on a track? )

- Look KG 196 TT

lotus sport 110

- Indurains/Ullrichs Pinarello coat hanger
- Obrees homebrew
- The US teams super-narrow GTs
- Cinelli Laser
- Cat Cheetah Triathlon TT machine

- A Rene Herse Randonneur

also:
- Coppis Bianchi
- Bottecchias Automoto
- Merckx' Merckx
- the Badger's Peugeot
- the Jerk's Trek OCLV
- the Pirate's Willier. And his Bianchi
- Thurau's Gios
etc etc etc...

The more iconic it is, the more widely known it is and the easier it is to come to mind without much effort. It's not iconic if you have to do some research or google it in order to find it or jolt your memory.

I would say the most iconic bike of all time is the Colnago C40.

Second to that...as much as we don't like to admit, is probably the Trek OCLV with the US Postal Team.

This picture kind of makes me turn my tummy. I bought that bike at used bike sale about 15 years ago for 275.00 We had small house and wife said it wouldn't stay so I sold it to what would become bike rendezvous for 700 plus 2 silk tires. :-(

Wait! More info on the backstory here please. What I’m getting is that this frame was yours at some point, and then you sold it to someone else who turned it into the picture above? My tummy is turning a bit for you as well. It’s a frame I remember lusting after. It’s beautiful. What do you mean when you say it became “bike rendezvous”?
This is a great thread by the way.
And yes, that Merckx photo of the bike and the man is certainly iconic. And the C40 for sure. So many great memories being brought up in this thread.

So you are for ignoring specific instructions by the OP? He specifically said NOT just models of bikes, but specific rider's bikes.

I was goibgvto mention one of the Moser Cinelli Lazer bikes.

Broblem being, that many of the bikes mentioned were completely indistinguishable from their contemporary "non-iconic" siblings if cosmetic stuff like paint or fork engravings were removed...

A few of mine (several already mentioned):
  • Peugeot PX-10
  • Cinelli SC
  • Masi GC (either Italian made or early California)
  • 7-Eleven Merckx Corsa
  • Motorola Merckx MXL
  • Colnago C40 (especially Mapei, Rabobank, and Lampre team colors)
  • Trek 5xxx/Madone in USPS colors
  • De Rosa Professional
  • Pantani Bianchi
  • And of course, the Motorola Merckx Ti made by Litespeed that Armstrong rode to the 1993 World Championship.

Each of these are definitely iconic.

The bike built by Orville and Wilbur Wright that, when I saw it, was on display at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.

Very fun thread. Reminded of several *iconic* bikes, and several I didn't know. Previously mentioned the Luis Ocana Motobocane as it doesn't seem to fit and yet. That was the bike the rider Merckx called his greatest competitor rode. This isn't a poll, but seems like if it were and didn't include TT or MTB bikes, then the C40 might *win*.
