I guess they go hand in hand, I just think that an iconic bike should in itself be something outstanding/ground breaking. Maybe Boardman's Lotus? Those Cervelos (CSC ones) that were aero? I guess the big fat alloy tubed Cannondales mentioned previously are a good shout.

As mentioned in the OP, I still have the deep lust for a Tomac Raleigh with that hilarious disc thing on the rear wheel.

And for fun because everyone over a certain age remembers it, that Cannondale magazine bike with the rollerblade front wheels.
