11sp cassette on 10sp hub?

Hi all
I have the 10sp specific 7800 hubs. I'm aware that the new CS-HG700 and CS-HG800 11/34 cassettes are supposed to fit due to the big cogs riding out over the spokes

Question is if a Sram 11/36 might also work? I have an 11sp group inbound but would like to keep costs down and just use a cassette to solve the 11sp issue.

Nope to sram road, and everything but the shimano 11-34 or mountain cassettes (e.g. 11-40). True road 11sp cassettes are taller to fit the 1.85mm longer road version of the HG freehub. The extra space is behind the largest cog on the cassettes; on the mountain (and 11-34) cassettes, the largest cog does not “ride over” the spokes, but rather there is just a shorter spacer on the back. The 11t is in the same place. Of course you can run those cassettes on an 11sp freehub with that 1.85 mm spacer behind it.

Are your 7800 hubs of the series where the splines are taller like the one pictured?

If they are and aren't the regular type, you'll have problems making any other cassettes fit..

I don't think that cassette will work either. I had a buddy try to run an newish 11-34 Tiagra cassette on the 7800 hubs, and the spline of the cassette wasn't deep enough to fit on the freehub body. You need to stick with a ten speed cassette that was being made when those hubs were still around. I used a 5700 12-27.

I can still remember clearly Shimano's seminar and roll-out of their then-new 10s freehub.
Had me puzzled, as I had always thought that their freehub was better designed than all of the other's "four-bearing" designs.

But my 'tude was softened by their generous gift of a new 10s chain tool, one that seems made well enough to last forever (no, it's not even the one with wooden handles).

And I find myself now stuck with a couple of those hubsets, new in boxes, not sure if still worth a build effort in this day and age.

More hassle than it would be worth. Use almost any other hub!

Especially 7700 hubs - match well enough, and don't have the cassette compatibility issues.

All 11 speed shimano/sram mountain cassettes will fit on a 10 speed shimano/sram freehub unless you have the weird dura ace titanium version. I use the 11-36T sunrace on my 10 speed freehub.

He has the freehub body on 7800 hubs that ONLY fits Shimano 10 speed road cassettes.

Send me your unwanted 10 speed hubs, I have had a friend who owns a machine shop cut down these hubs for me and I now run any Shimano cassette I want.

FH-7800 hubs - no, FH-7850 - yes.

I will never understand why Shimano didn't use the tall alu splines when they went to 11sp.
