+1 for metal bikes

See Peter Sagan’s one-off Allez Sprint Disc
Peter Sagan will break from the norm by racing an aluminium bike in the Down Under Classic, a crit race ahead of the Tour Down Under next week.

Nothing wrong with aluminum or even steel in races, the issue is that carbon is the way to go for them as a norm because sponsors tells the team what to use.

The other situation is that modern aluminum has to ride totally different than to what columbus and Deda used to manufacture.

For the record my fav bike years ago was a de rosa made of aluminum and carbon. My old ridley compact flew like the best aswell, BMC road racer aluminum? that thing was fantastic and I found it way better as a bike than the carbon version. Even in old steel, many here still rides and probably some still racing their 80s racing machines because are quicker than modern stuff.

It's marketing and it's professional cycling, which is a marketing juggernaut.

Not that there's anything wrong with it but pro cycling is entertainment and is and always has been promoted to sell stuff.

By putting the world's most high profile rider on a different bike Specialized have drawn attention to themselves quite nicely.
