OT - Rolex watch market

So it seems that the grey market for Rolex (and other watches) has taken a big tumble past couple of months. It seems to have opened up some opportunities to actually buy a watch at MSRP from an AD.
I got a call about availability of a new Rolex SeaDweller and I couldn’t say no. I have had my name on a wait list at a couple of places for almost 2 years, and I happened to call this place a only couple of months ago, so I was surprised that they contacted me so quickly.

I apologize. This is where I come for non-watch content.

Business Insider recently wrote a piece about the slower growth of the luxury watch market.

Sorry for cat3roadracer, but this is A-OK content.

Most people don't realize that "registering intent" to buy a $6,000+ watch is almost the same as making a wish when you blow out the candles on a birthday cake.

You put in the work and it finally happened--congrats! I don't think the market is as soft as you think but it's a good sign that people that have been actively trying to get watches can actually have a chance at getting them.

Sea Dweller is an impressive feat of engineering btw.

Interest rates are rising, the economy is slowing. I'd think over the next 6-18 months there will be a lot of softening in many of the overbought high end markets. Nice watch.

Recessions do that to luxury goods.

(Searches "Rolex 16710" on Chrono24)...

Huh. I think I'll wait for it to "soften" a bit more...

Congrats on the beautiful watch though.

This. My son has been playing the game with the AD for the past year or so. He's interested in a no date Submariner (I think he should get new windows for his house but that's a different discussion),

Beautiful watch, enjoy

good on you getting one at msrp. watch market has been crazy and still is a little bit. I can appreciate watches, I think they are cool but hard to drop that much money on one but if I would I would do a GMT II.

but the true godtier watch that is not a rolex is of course a casio

Nice watch!

I'm starting to feel old now; and certainly out of touch with the watch market, which I was so immersed in years ago. I had no idea the new sea dweller had the red markings now and the magnifier! Quite a change up from the classics.

Is Rolex still very tight lipped about releasing the actual MSRP numbers?

So I take it, when you got the call from the AD, in the current environment, the deal is just go in and pay the msrp, no games these days?

Enjoy the timepiece!

Beautiful watch. Still loving my 44 yo GMT Master...Just had it serviced and first 'watch maker', altho the lady said was 'Rolex certified', they couldn't get it right.
I suspect he didn't have the wee tool to adjust the accuracy. So...sent to Rolex Service center via a local Rolex dealer..

BTW-bought it in 1978 for $645...

As an aside..I know it speaks to the depth capability of the watch but safe to depth of 4000ft...if it came off your wrist...and sank to say 'only' 1000 feet..how do you retrieve it...?

As to 'why is this here'...OT, everything from boils to guitars to bitcoin to blenders to.....so what..don't like it, don't read it.

from what I been reading (I went into a youtube k hole about rolex and just the watch market) its impossible to get a rolex from a authorized retailer. Apparently they will sell ya a rolex but you will have to buy a bunch of other crap from them in order to be able to buy the watch. Why the grey market is doing so good.

I am definitely hoping the watch market softens a touch more. I am also looking for a submariner or gmt and prices have been insane. I don’t necessarily have to have new however, and those prices should drop a bit faster.

Last week the Yen dropped a TON and I was able to score a beautiful Omega for nearly half of what they have been going for recently. It’s my first higher end watch and it is awesome.

I know, right! Talking about buying stuff at MSRP. That should be a subforum where IDs are automatically masked.

How embarrassing.
