For me it's knowing how hard it is to lay a fillet down that doesn't look like bird feces, as well the skill it takes it polish it down.

As a kid I envied all my buddies and their fillet brazed schwinns, now I'm looking at all these pictures you guys are posting the same way.

I really dig fillet brazed bikes (a mid-1990s Moser comes to mind). The strange thing is that IMHO the joints don't end up looking a whole lot different than those on an aluminum Cannondale or even an old Schwinn Varsity or Continental.

This observation means that I probably don't deserve to own a fillet brazed frame - ever.

Being an idiot about such things for quite a while, I always thought that the Varsity, Continental and some other lower models were somehow brazed. Then I read the linked article in the Rivendell Reader. Of course, it begs the question - if it looks fillet brazed (and had real rear dropouts instead of crappy stamped steel) and somehow the strength, weight and ride characteristics could be duplicated, does it really matter how it was made? After all, it's not like any of us would strip the paint to check the brazing technique.

That's interesting, I didn't know that's how Schwinn did it. But I loved the look anyway, Fillet Brazed or not. Sure beats the giant nasty welds on my Taiwanese Alu/Carbon bike.
