What are you drinking on the bike?

..aside from water?

I generally ride with one bottle of water, the other with some sort of powder mix in it. I was given a tin of Gatorade that I had to choke through last year, now with the season looming I'll get something else. Anything you have been using that you'd recommend?

Skratch Labs powder got me through some consecutive 90 degree plus days of riding on a 7 day endurance ride last year.

Do I think it's anything more than salty, sugar water? No.

Nuun... that's probably my favorite.

I also have some of the Hammer stuff that is basically the same thing as Nuun. They are interchangeable for me, but the Hammer stuff needlessly has Gluten added to it, so if you have Celiac or are sensitive to Gluten it's out. (My wife & son have Celiac so we need to be careful not to switch water bottles or something.)

I will sometimes add sugar to these if I want to add some calories.

Both these kind of tablet drinks are great for long rides cause you can throw additional tablets in a plastic bag and then mix stuff up at a water fountain or just buy some bottled water. Then you're not stuck drinking gatorade.

I'm going to buy some Perpeteum soon. If the temperature is moderate/cold Perpeteum works pretty well for me on really long rides. For rides > 50 miles I'll do the thing where I make a pretty concentrated bottle of perpeteum for calories and then do straight electrolytes in the other bottle and work on the perpeteum over many hours.

Gatorade is the worst... all sodium & sugar and almost no potassium/magnesium... always makes me feel bloated and/or nauseous in hot weather. Powerade is pretty much the same thing.

Gu Roctane - the grape flavor which doesn't have added caffeine. It's calories plus electrolytes. I used to do Skratch plus Carbopro but I like this better.

Always plain water in the second bottle.

There can be only one - Hammer HEED. Been using it religiously since 2004. Nothing comes close. "Mild Melon" is my flavor of choice.

I started using the Nuun Performance mix last summer and really liked it. I had been using Osmo for a few summers but always found that no matter what I tried it never blended completely and there would always be some grit in the bottom of the bottle that never dissolved. That said, the Osmo was leagues better than Skratch in that regard.

The Nuun dissolves really well and the taste is nice and subtle. It was formulated by Stacy Sims who worked with Allen Lim on Skratch and then formulated Osmo after she and Lim dissolved their parternship.
