I doubt we’ll see it again, though it would be nice. Brands want to be seen as moving forward, not backwards. The market for a reissue of the 585 is probably quite small.

Really cool. I used to love riding down there from the U and over to Ft. Snelling to watch some planes land. Good old days!

Reviving an old thread.

I just bought & built a brand new Look 585 that the previous owner kept in a closet for 14 years (!) and never used. When the deal came up on Craigslist, for the frame in my size for a good price, I couldn't resist. These were the hot bikes back when I got into road cycling ~2007 and back then I knew I wanted one someday--and finally got it.

Rides great except for one issue that I can't seem to find any mention of anywhere on the internet. The front wheel rubs on the brake pads whenever I'm sprinting out of the saddle.

Not even a full sprint, just a ~500w effort and some side-to-side weight shifting on the handlebars will cause the front wheel brake track to rub on the pads. Double checked both wheels, skewer tightness, even changed to a smaller tire. It feels to me that the fork blades are super soft because if you push the rim side-to-side with your fingers its easy to push it against the brake pads.

I have not yet had a chance to try other wheels yet but I never experienced this on any other frame with these Light Bicycle wheels. I am 65kg so not a heavyweight. I know the 585, even in its Ultra form, is not the stiffest frame, especially compared to today's standards. But I'm a little puzzled here. Could it be a bad fork?

I'd probably start by trying a different wheel.

I love those bikes and remember gawking at them when they first came out! Yours looks rad.

Wheel is too stiff for bike/fork at your weight/size.

My 585 Origin did same thing with a Rolf CX58 wheel.

It's 25c with plenty of clearance.. definitely not tire rub. Will give another wheel a try, though.

Even though it’s a fairly deep carbon rim, I would suspect your 20 spoke front wheel is the problem here, not the fork.

Frame set is fine.

I don't think wheel stiffness is a thing as far as this use case goes. If anything, something about the wheel system is too flexible (the build/spoke count/bearing adjustment/skewers --somewhere.) Got a pic of pad spacing? Can't see how tire size would relate.

HSC forks from my experience are not particularly stiff. From HSC3 forward IMO. But that is why I like them, an AME by comparison I always found overly stiff. Fine if up are sprinting 24/7 and every waking moment.

I took an AME off a Strong frame in favor of HSC3 and stopped getting beat up, a friend with a Feather Ti did this also. And my steel Strong was way stiffer than that Feather, his bike benefited greatly with more flex balance greatly.

What I do not know is if the Origin and Ultra had different fork specs. Stands to reason the Ultra would have stiffer fork.

I found the Origin in an XL with my 210lb butt on it barely stiff enough, but it was. The total upside being a bike that felt like a dream with even 23mm tires. But not the complete noodle a early Spesh Roubaix Fact-6R I once had was. But when you were JRA the 6R Roubaix with 23s was a dream in the smooth dept. The Origin a big improvement over that Roubaix IME.

I had one just like that and a special edition red model. Nice bikes. Fork stiffness was never a problem for me.

I have the same bike and love it. Haven't had any fork issues but at 135lbs I'm not super strong.
Mine is a 48cm, yours looks a bit on the small side as well?

Good luck!
Steve

No issues of this nature ever with my 585s, which remain my daily riders. I know they’re not ultra stiff but they’re stiff enough for 99.99% of average Joes.

I don’t know what’s going on but it sounds bizarre. Definitely try it with different wheels.

super stupid question here, but..

have you loosened the quick release to ensure the axles are sitting in the dropouts correctly? I was sure I had installed my rear correctly one day and then felt "slow".. (I am slow, but not this slow!) it turned out when I loosened my QR, the axle dropped down into the dropout correctly.. probably not the issue, but can't hurt to check, if you haven't yet..

** sorry, looks like you did this already.. missed it in my first read..
