Helmets

Is there anything 'wrong' with wearing an mtb helmet when riding a road bike on the road?

I have a Giro with a visor, and now i need a new helmet due to crash damage. I like the visor. It helps to keep a low Sun out of my eyes in the mornings and evenings, and it does deflect rain away from my glasses.

Would the Bell Super mtb helmet be too much of a helmet for the road?

I was considering a similar helmet (forgot which one, sorry) because I liked the fact that the back of the head was protected better than with a standard road helmet. I say get it and wear it.

Do what you please; it can't look any sillier than those Giro's that look like hockey helmets. I want to slap a CCM sticker on the side of those every time I see one.

I go with a cycling cap if I want a visor. Best of both worlds.

+1... Just flip the cap backwards if it's not sunny. The cap/visor works pretty well in the rain and is extra protection when bees visit your helmet as well. I've been liking the caps coming from Rothera Cycling these days. Gary will let you design your own cap too in terms of main panel colors and stripes.

IT could be a bit less ventilated on the road but that might also mean it's better for your head!

these are really nice. Do they run small? For example, pace caps are too small for me.

Wear what you want. All cycling gear looks silly, rules about what is cool and what is not cool are just foolish.

No..they are pretty much dead on for a medium to large noggin and they don't shrink. I had a Rapha cap in large which was pretty tight in my book. I've had Pace caps in cotton and they do seem to run small.

I also like the fact that the Rothera sweatband is uniform in size (1.5" if I recall) all the way around, as when it's cloudy, I tend to flip my cap backwards. With the other caps, they seem to make the sweatband smaller in the back and you end up with a small crease in your forehead after a three hour ride and they offer limited sweat protection.

Reach out to Gary at Rothera as he's easy to get in touch with and he's very eager to make a cap that you'll like and use. I'll post some pics later today.

+1 on Rothera caps. I have several and he made the last two rounds of custom caps I ordered. Long lead time for my last order though.

I agree one wearing what you want. At 45 I am past caring. I want function and a good fit (and safety when it comes to helmets). I personally wear a Giro cap made of some kind of wicking material. It has a visor and hot or cold i wear it because it blocks the sun and keeps sweat from getting in my eyes. But wearing a cap regularly negates the venting benefits of a lot of helmets. Nonetheless, and considering I live in a pretty warm area of the country, I'm happy with my set up. But i've considered a mtb helmet for safety reasons too (since the drivers around here are pretty bad).

except for full-calf compression socks....those things exude coolness.

take the visor off a MTB helmet and can't really tell a difference.
