Russian athletes withdraw from competition when drug testers arrive

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...testers-arrive

Quote:
More than 30 Russian athletes participating in Siberian Indoor Championships last weekend abruptly withdrew from competition when drug testers arrived at the event.

According to the Russian sports website Championat, as many as 36 athletes cited various illnesses for withdrawing from the competition at the city of Irkutsk.
The all drug olympics are apparently a real thing.

There was a rumor that they were having drug testing at SuperWeek one year in the late 80's, I moved up 22 places overnight!

i dont get it? they withdrew when the drug testers "arrived" - was it some kind of surprise that there would be drug testing?

some events have a history of being tester-free, thus good events for dopers to test their condition while in the middle of a cycle. apparently WADA didnt get the memo this year!

What!?:

In 2016, one Russian athlete tried to bribe a drug tester and another ran out of the stadium during her own race to avoid being tested...

My god, that's hard not to forehead-slap laugh at.

that is awesome.

i hope the WADA testers all wear long white lab coats too, for effect. so when you see them coming into the stadium, you know to run.

LOL, literally.

I'm picturing Forrest Gump continuing to run after the touchdown and out the stadium.

Apparently, in Putinland, it's always a surprise when WADA shows up.

Ah, the Russians. State-sanctioned doping is still big there.

It peaked in the US in '84, and the cool sprinter kids were all over it in Canada in '88.

The Chinese still love it and probably always will.

The Norwegians dabbled in the '90s.

The out-of-the-way countries like Jamaica will keep dabbling as long as cousin Herb works at the immigration booth and can make a phone call when the testers fly in.

All of this pales in comparison to entertainment-sports with real money on the line. State-sponsored doping has got nothing on the NFL, MLB, PGA, Premier League, SerieA, NHL....
