Road 1x discussion thread

I’m gonna put together my first 1x setup. Has anyone tried a regular rear clutches derailuer with a Road 1x setup. I was gonna give it a try. I can see off-road needing the clutch but on the road doesn’t make much sense to me.

I’m thinking of going
Chorus shifters
44 tooth 1x spidering and hollowgram SL cranks
Chorus mid cage with wolf tooth roadlink
SRAM 11-36 rear gear
This would give me same high gearing as a 34-28. And low gearing as a 50-13
Anyone been down this road and have any suggestions?

I'd say give it a go and see how it is. My buddy Scott rode a singlespeed for years in San Diego. I think he was geared 49x17 and he'd do all the big climbs on it. Had a frameset built and runs 50x11-28.

the issue with a rear derailleur without a clutch is the loose chain in the smaller cogs. it may not be an issue as a road bike on smooth roads, but bouncing around could pop the chain off the front ring. I'm building a gravel bike with 1x with a narrow/wide and xt rear mech with a clutch and it seems like the clutch really tightens up the chain. The issue seems to be chainline smoothness...

I ride exactly that gearing on an old CX frame for commuting and crappy weather road training. I use a cheap Sram apex derailleur, so no clutch, but its wifli, so takes up all the chain slack. The front chainring is wide/narrow, which I think makes a big difference. I’ve had zero problems with dropped chains or anything like that. The gearing is fine for going uphill, but I have run out of gears chasing people downhill. I really like the setup as far as being no nonsense, easy to clean, one fewer cable to worry about, etc.

Can't say I've tried, but I'll be interested to hear the results as I'd like the run the same ratios and a similar setup. If 1*12 becomes a thing, I think a 44t chainring and a 10-36 cassette would be perfect.

Im waiting for the 10-36 with 1 tooth steps for the first 5 cogs...maybe:
10,11,12,13,14,16,21,25,30,36

I ran 46 x 11/36 for a summer on my road bike. I liked it. My only wish was for the 14. That jump between the 13 and 15 was a little much. The 46/36 was also pretty noisy.

11-36 is pretty good. Spot on there wrt missing 14.

i have a plan to build a bike in the basement with 42t front narrow-wide ring, 11x34 in the rear with a campy mid cage RD. i think the gearing will be good for lots of the local riding i do, and i have so many damned bikes, i'm not worried about having gearing for every situation on this bike. should be a fun ride.

what i'm really interested to see is how i like the elliptical chainring. wondering if i'll be able to note a difference from round.

48T Narrow wide up front and 11-32 with regular WiFli RD out back here. 1 dropped chain in ~5000 miles. No idea how it happened either, it was at the top of a hill.

OK... bear with me here... I have to ask... why?

I understand the benefits of 1x in MTB, cyclocross, gravel riding, and in fat tire biking, where chain drops and/or drivetrain crud make the simplicity of 1x a great option.

But why on a bike meant to ride the road?

Glad somebody asked. Take high gear and low gear desired, add a second chainring and generally fool proof front der shifter and have a smaller and closer spaced cogset....this for the road, yes? No need for clutches or expensive NW chainring....kinda don't get it...weight savings. I guess but minimal. Simplicity? Yup but road front ders work really well. Seems even sram has figured it out.

IMHO of course.

And before people start yelling about lawns and such, title, Road 1x DISCUSSION thread, eh? Discuss.

for me: i've got a whole bunch of operational road bikes. it's just something different. variety and all. no perceived advantage to a double or triple set-up for the road.

but hey - i ride a fixed gear on the road a lot too. 1x1 !

so if they question is "why"? - my answer is variety.

Every time one of these threads starts it inevitably starts- “why?”

I have a 1x11 and really like it-
It reminds me of the tight ratios I had when I started riding- and appreciate the simplicity of it (not that the double is a challenge- it is just different- like the difference between automatic transmission and a manual transmission)

I want to try a wide range cassette this year- just starting to look into this so eager to hear what people are doing
