I think just about everything in richmond is 15 min apart... you'll be pleased getting out of NoVa.

There are lots of good neighborhoods for you to choose form, from the Fan westward, that are easy drive to work in Tuckahoe and you could extend all the way to Goochland and Ashland. Further west has more accessible open road but there’s still plenty of cars to contend with. In addition to the Richmond area routes and riding groups, on the west side you are also about an hour door to door to Charlottesville with road and trail clubs. If you are into gravel, check out https://www.greeneva.bike/services

Agree with the above. RABA is the main club and they have good routes and group rides.

I agree with pretty much everything said, everything is relatively close around RVA, I could never live in NoVa. Generally, if you like more open space, look west into Goochland. Its +/- 20 minutes from downtown goochland to Tuckahoe on slow county roads without much traffic. There are lots of nice road routes you can find or create. Mtn biking at Leakes Mill Park is good if quick singletrack is your thing, Pocohantas State Park is 30 minutes away and also has good trails.
I'm in Goochland, maybe a 10-15 minute drive anywhere in Short Pump, or "downtown" tuckahoe, near enough almost any store you can imagine, but far enough away too. Ashland is the "center of the universe," it's their motto, but it's a small town feel and pretty open area and also about 15 minutes away. Rockville is my favorite area to ride. Some areas of Powhattan county wouldn't be too far from Tuckahoe and is more rural. Raba (Richmond Area Bicycle Association) is the main cycling group in the area, but I dont know if they are doing group rides at the moment, they do have cue sheets on their website though. Feel free to PM for any specific details, I'd be happy to share what I know. |

I don't miss those days. But I used to take the bus to the trains. Do people still 'scab' rides to get on the HOV?

I worked in RVA for a few months. I was staying out in Short pump area. Its a bit over crowded but there are heaps of shopping. The ~20 minute commute during "rush hour" was a breeze.
Did some nice rides out in rockville/dabneys area but that is Goochland county. Good luck. |

I lived in Carytown for a few years in early 00’s. We loved that neighborhood and still like to go back to visit there. I’m kind of a city guy - like to be walking and bike riding distance to stuff, so Carytown was perfect. All kinds of good eats and shops on Cary Street, grocery store and branch library close by. I had a route to ride north through Ashland, another through West End across the Huguenot Bridge and along the River and another across the Nickel Bridge. I think real estate has gotten pricier there. A little further out to West End is more typical homes with yards and still pretty nicely located.
We were a one car family, my wife worked at VCU and I was at the hospital downtown. I would either ride, run, or bus to work. Richmond is a cool place but I think you need to live in the city to get the most out of it, but again I’m a city guy. Feel free to PM me for info, but mine is a little out of date. |
