Hill repeats ?

So Why does a 65 year old guy do hill repeats ? I think it is fun
I climbed 3051 feet in 25 miles ,the mileage included getting to the hill across the Golden Gate Bridge up to the summit of hawk hill from bunker Up McCullough
It is the back side I usually do the full Conzelman around down to field road then to bunker But decided to do repeats .I know It not much compared to what some of you guys do .
Someone crashed on Conzelman on the downhill after the summit two fire trucks and two police cars went by me on my last trip up to the summit of Conzelman I did Not go to see what happened but it is fairly technical decent , it was very foggy .
I hope the rider was not hurt to badly
Cheers to All

“August of another summer, and once again
I am drinking the sun
and the lilies again are spread across the water.
I know now what they want is to touch each other.
I have not been here for many years
during which time I kept living my life.
Like the heron, who can only croak, who wishes he
could sing,
I wish I could sing.
A little thanks from every throat would be appropriate.
This is how it has been, and this is how it is:
All my life I have been able to feel happiness,
except whatever was not happiness,
which I also remember.
Each of us wears a shadow.
But just now it is summer again
and I am watching the lilies bow to each other,
then slide on the wind and the tug of desire,
close, close to one another.
Soon now, I’ll turn and start for home.
And who knows, maybe I’ll be singing.”

Nice job!

That's such a beautiful ride. I used to ride it early in the morning when I lived there and wore a younger man's lycra.

I regret not riding it more and am envious that you get to. In your circumstances, repeats are simply a repetition of breathing in (hard) the astounding natural beauty. Good for you.

Marin Headlands...sorely missed

Back in the day I used to live in the City - would ride across the GG bridge and do the MH loop (Conzelman etc.) before getting back home and getting ready for my summer job.

I remember those roads dearly and they are sorely missed. So much fun being able to do them in the pre-work fog and mist.

I also remember those days riding a bike with a 42/52 and 12/21. What was I thinking?!

Wish I could get back there - not sure when - but those rides were something special. Thanks for the memories - and good riding!

That’s the place to do a hill repeat. Never too hot and you’re rewarded with a nice view. That ride across the Bridge, up the hill and down to Rodeo Beach was a regular of mine BITD.

Another former San Francisco person here. In the early 90's I had my 1992 Trek 2100, 7 speed, 39x23 low gear. I remember one particular freezing cold day struggling up McCullough road. A cyclist with a strong Sean Kelly accent zooms by and says "Hard to push those cranks around eh?" I hadn't discovered shoe covers yet and had duct tape covering the vents on my Vittoria lace ups. Shivering and miserable. After that I vowed revenge on that hill! Me being in my early 20's and not too bright then went and replaced the chain rings with 56/42 (thanks Bicycle Odyssey!). I figured if my cadence was going to be 40 I might as well get more distance out of each mash.

Around that time I also had a Marin Pine Mountain mountain bike with an XT 7 speed triple and 24x28 low. My friend and I would start at Lombard and Divisadero and climb up to Broadway then back down. Then move one block over to Scott. Up to Broadway and back. Then to Pierce, etc. Usually by Webster we were done with aching knees.

Nice job, Butch!
Here’s somebody who took it to an incredible level.
The road is about a mile and a half from my house.

Headlands Loop is my favorite ride, such beautiful views (when it's not foggy).

I'm 62, grew up in San Francisco, still live in San Francisco, but I didn't really start to enjoy and explore the Marin Headlands on a bike until I retired.

Here's a photo from my ride there last week:

For decades, I struggled up those roads! the toughest part is the start from the bridge, once you get around the bend, the road is not as steep and you can enjoy the view and settle into a nice cadence. but the best kept secret are the trails that are open to bikes...33s would be minimum...I'm just saying.
