Shifting sluggish in Cold?

This morning I took off for a ride early and it was a little cool. 50 degrees or so.

Neither my front nor rear derailleurs would change gears. After 5-10 minutes they would switch gears.

Ultegra 8000 mechanical. The levers would move the full swipe, but no movement in the derailleurs.

Is this something to be concerned about?

It sounds like your cables are sluggish, perhaps from lube thickening from the cold?

My Shimano 105 11-speed also acts up in the cold but typically when it's 30deg or lower. I actually posted about that here about a year ago. The forum wisdom IIRC at the time was that the grease inside gets cold and less viscous or something like that. So yeah happens to me too but colder.

50F doesn’t seem to be cold enough to cause that type of reaction. It can’t hurt to squirt a shot of lube near the cable entry on the derailleur and the entry at the STI. How old are the cables?

Cables

I would have though 50 was not cold enough either...

Cables are just over 2 years old. 4k miles or so.

Check all contact points with the frame and also housing ends. There's gotta be some schmutz in there.

If the lever moves, but the cables don't, the pawls are not engaging in the shifter. Blast out the shifter internals with WD-40-- a lot of it. You have to rinse out all the old gummy grease. I suppose the best thing is to re-grease, but I wouldn't take apart a Shimano shifter. Just follow the WD-40 with some other low viscosity lube.
