Open Cycles

Hopped into a shop today and saw this brand for the first time.
Had never heard of it. Supposedly it's Vroomen's new gig. Didn't even know he had left Cervelo. Supposedly the deal was he not do road bikes so he's doing MTB and cross.

I have seen the Open U.P. frameset. It looks versatile. I look forward to seeing it built up.

Yeah.. that UP looks cool. Saw that a few months back and it just looks plain fun and plus, so versatile.

I've been eying the U.P. Frameset for a while now. Some really smart design features. Others, like a front derailleur attachment point optimized for a 52t big ring make less sense to me. And kinda pricey compared to competitors, but still want one.

Noticed a set of bosses on the top tube but couldn't see myself putting an extra bottle there. Maybe some other intended use.

The top tube bosses are for a tool kit or feed bag. Seems like a handy feature for a bike designed for endurance rides, much more elegant than velcro-mounted alternatives.

Anyone ridden one?

Reviving this thread. Getting serious about consolidating the herd and the Open UP (https://opencycle.com/up/) looks like it might take the place of at least two of my bikes.

Anyone ridden one? Thoughts? Feelings? Impressions on fit and ride?

Thanks.

I am sure I am going to sound completely out of touch and probably a bit like a grouch but why are production bikes so damn expensive? I really like this one and the 3t version but I can't bring myself to lay down that kind of scratch for a non-custom pop out.

Nothing first hand, but saw one in the window at a shop in Chicago last month. Ended up chatting with the owner, also the shop owner, since the UP has been on my short list the last year. He did a similar consolidation and replaced his gravel and carbon crux. Was adamant that he was giving up nothing even in cross races.

Have to say it looked even better in person.

The LBS closest to me has them. The staff love them and said the ride is great. I love the concept, but I prefer ti, especially for off pavement riding. Asfar as cost goes, seems in line with carbon frames, especially from an inventive designer.

Wanna trade??

I think these are the real deal. I have seen them in the flesh and know several owners. All praise them. My feeling is that everyone (the ones in the know) have realized that having a road bike geo with big tires is the ideal setup for gravelbikes. My next bike will be a 650b with 42cm chainstays that will fit 38+ tires. My Bilenky was the best feeling gravel bike because of its road geo and clearance for 33mm tires. it was just so heavy.

Where are you going to fine something like that that is as light, dialed in, and stiff as an Open? Only custom builders that are making something like this are 44 bikes and Soulcraft. Firelfy made the Jan bike too. I doubt any of those (maybe the firefly) is as light.

It's for mounting a bento box.

Much like Cervelo, they do 99% cool stuff with one thing on every bike that makes you go wuuuuuut?
