Carbon Clincher Conundrum

Hello everyone,

Looking into getting some carbon clinchers for my Moots Vamoots CR with Ultegra 6800/Da9000 mixed group.

The moots is currently running an Ultegra 6800 wheelset and it is the nicest wheelset i have owned since i got my first road bike in 2009. (My trek has a bontrager set and my Caad10 has mavic aksiums.)

I live in the Chicagoland area so the wheels would mostly see flats and occasionally rolling hills, no steep climbs or descending.

Looking to spend around 1,000 to 1,500 for new wheels.

So far for consideration are:

Competitive cyclist Mercury M5~900ish
Psimet (local wheels similar to boyd) ~1100 but could upgrade to white industries hubs for a bit more
Reynolds? Strike/assault and other models?
Campy bora50 ~ 1700 and would need a shimano freehub
Are there any other wheels in the price range that i am missing? What do you guys feel would be the bust buy???

I saw OldPotatoe had some carbon wheels recently.

Probably the way to go.

This would be an amazing deal if they weren't in China! I'd be afraid of damage in shipping, customs and the amount of time it would take to get here.

The Reynolds stuff is all good. Or, find a lightly used set of ENVE's here or on eBay.

Good luck!

Light-Bicycle has a pretty solid reputation. They also just opened/partnered with someone here in the states. I just ordered some rims from Nextie and it went pretty smooth, even though I ordered them during their new years.

I would get REYNOLDS ASSAULT. I had them for a season. They feel good, Japanese carbon made here in USA per Reynolds. I ran tubes 1/2 season, then I set them tubeless with Bontrager R3 TLR tires 25mm. The ride quality was excellent. I have only good things to say about them, solid wheel. I strongly recommend them.
All the best.

Bora one 50 (I have the 35's here in SF). I doubt you'll find as nice a hub with any of the other options. Campy hubs are very hard to beat. Braking is excellent... truly excellent.

Really can't say enough good things about these wheels. I'm blown away.

Another vote for Boyd.
I have been running two different sets for several months and am very pleased.

Very well thought out wheels. Tubeless if you want to go that route or run tubes without any issue. I would recommend having them set-up as tubeless and then run however you want (you just pull out the preinstalled tubeless value and keep the tape in place).
AL or carbon rims.
Various depths.
His in-house hubs work really well or you can go for the White hubs.

And they are great to deal with.

IMO, I don't think the WI is an upgrade. Several years now running Boyd hubs on a cross bike in all conditions, some of the smoothest hubs I own.

This goes up price wise, $900 if you choose DT240 hubs.

Yes, I thought the conundrum was going to be about putting the words "carbon" and "clincher" together.

Hey, I ride clinchers (tubulars just seem like so much trouble), but with aluminum rims. But if you want the best performance from a four figure carbon wheelset, you really should be thinking about tubulars. Go all the way! Otherwise, what are you spending the money for?

I was carbon curious too. I found a pair of Reynolds Assaults for a decent price on eBay. I was a bit apprehensive buying used, but so far they have been good. They use KT hubs. The hubs are smooth. Nice wheel set without breaking the bank.
In this case it was money well spent.
